    Dust remover

    Hi

I was just wondering if anyone has used or seen any Electrostatic dust removers, I have my PC in the bedroom and it collects dust fairly quickly, only fine dust but as the case is now black it shows up more.
I have seen this at Robertdyas http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/P~150709...Light+HF-210UV and was wondering if it would do the job.
I am sure I saw some other electrostatic dust collector advertised in the paper a while back but forgot to keep the ad.

Are they any good or just a con, I don't need it to purify the air just help to keep the dust levels down.

    Thanks

Anyhting that confuses static with magnetism can't be good.
"Advanced air-cleaning capacity: The electrostatically-charged dust-collection plates magnetically trap pollutants."
I'd be googling elsewhere, but I think you'd probably get more use from a Roomba or an Asthma sufferers product range.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Re: Dust remover

So basically it's a product based on a single piece of data, negative ions are more common outside (presumably due the action of sunlight and UV radiation), and therefore replicating that effect makes the air "better" for you.

    Re: Dust remover

I've seen them before they are supposed to work, esp in a dry environment
In a dry environment, electro static charges build up on the dust making it stick to things. also dry air allows more dust particles to become air born.
Damp air contains far less particulate matter.

I don't know really how well those ionizers actually work, the simple way is just open a window, let some cold wet air from outside in.

someone like which must have used one and seen it grabbing a layer of dust on its filter or not at some point

It says it has low operating costs without saying how many watts it consumes! Different people had different ideas of what 'low cost' means. Also, the fan could be noisy and irritating.

You could try using anti-static products on the case? Like products designed for cleaning TV's etc.

    Re: Dust remover

I was just wondering if they actually work at collecting dust, not sure about this negative ions cleaning the air and that sort of thing just interested in the dust side.

I am sure the advert in the paper I saw was just talking about dust collection but it was several weeks ago and I forgot to keep the ad.

If you look at the home page for the product it shows some picture of it cleaning an air filled box of smoke, note there is no video demo so that makes me a bit suspect.

    Re: Dust remover

Ok I didn't make my self so clear.

De-Ionizing the air should cause the air to contain less dust, as it will be able to sustain (hold) a lower volume of dust with in it's own volume.
The dust will of course go some where, namely it will be dropped via gravity on to any horizontal surface. (you'll also get less dust sticking to vertical surfaces)

If this device has a filter in then yes it will trap dust just as any fan+filter will (and you will regularly need to clean the filter.
Just checked the website, looks like this one uses an electromagnetic collection plate, causing the dust from dust laden air moving through it to stick to the plates instead of a physical filter (you'll still need to regularly clean the collection plates)

You could try a vacuum cleaner to reduce the total volume of dust from the room

EDIT: one other thing to mention, ionizers are good at removing smoke as they are big heavy particles they are less effective against dust, esp in terms of collection as the air moves through it, you'd want a HEPT filter as well as the ionizer.

bit noisy for 24/7 use, no? or were you a long-term delta fan user?

    Re: Dust remover

no just regular use of a vacuum cleaner, most air born dust settles over time, only to get picked up by disturbance.
If you suck it up off the ground then there's less to get back into the air.
