to be wholly honest i don't know how much grunt you will need for this, you could potentially get away with an atom mobo for half the price, because you seem to have built a very nice low power, small, general use pc at the moment, which may be overkill.

    Atom D525? http://www.ebuyer.com/product/242781

Incidentally my controller is playing up. About every other time I turn it on it seems to be working but the screen is all white. Might have to take it back to PC world. I'm starting to think I should have bought a squeezebox touch instead as I've read the sound quality is better, but then again does that really matter?

maybe, but then you have 2GB RAM, would it be identical on half a gig? i dont know, a smoothwall would, a home server wouldn't.

i think the whole thing sounds like it should be a program running on a build that encompasses more to be honest, and having it on its own hardware would be ridiculous. do they not make similar for an old windows mobile 6 phone that you can permanently plug into the charger and stream over wireless? it sounds like that. it sounds like a plugin to something else.

Mine's been sat around gathering dust since I first bought it, until I found instructions for getting Squeezeplay on it. It's a nice bit of kit which suffered badly from being released by O2 and their total lack of support for anything interesting on it. The only way to get much out of it was to use one of the hacks/mods available.

I bought a Joggler one time they were on offer for £50, never even powered the thing up. I really need to clear out and do a big for sale thread.

i had the whole ubuntu install planned out, even if it only ended up being a glorified alarm clock that could browse news sites it seemed like a totally valid purchase.

The thing is I don't really know what I want to achieve from a NAS or home server type box or what sort of spec is called for to run squeezebox server. Might have to read around the vortexbox site.

    Here we go:

    Hard Drive space

VortexBox is designed to run on a dedicated box. It uses up about 6 GB for itself and a little more than a 1/3 of a GB for each album ripped. So a 500GB hard drive could hold about 1400 CD worth of music.

    CPU

Any 500MHz P4 or faster i686 class processor should work well. VortexBox will not load on Via C5 or any other i586 type processor. The new Intel Atom works well.

    Memory

256k RAM is required. With 512K you can stream to several machines.

    CDROM

You should use a good IDE or SATA CD or DVD burner. Burners have better laser posissioning and you will get better quality rips.

    Player

VortexBox runs SqueezeCenter from SlimDevices so and SlimDevices player such as SqueezeBox or SqueezeBoom will work well. You can also use almost any other type of player including ipod touch, xbox 360, iTunes, windows media player, etc.
    Router

A router that can handle many small network packets such as a gaming router will work well. If you are using Wi-Fi for your network players this is very important. If you use a cheap or slow router you will get skips in your music.

Re: Squeezebox duet to play MP3 and FLAC or?

Reading this with interest as I am thinking of moving my collection onto a nas box and using something like a squeezebox to play it into my dac. I've been looking at the netgear one and just wishing someone reliable would buy it and just let me know if it works because so far all I've read is heresy and people saying ifs and buts.

I bought a ReadyNAS Duo for the firm I used to work for, as did my stepdad coincidentally - as far as I'm aware, neither box has skipped a beat.

I've been thinking a Shuttle XS35 would make a better NAS and can also function as a player with the addition of a DAC. Plus it could do lots of other thing a NAS can't do. And it has no fan. http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-...ntergrated-cpu
