    iPod apps similar to Spotify

I want to be able to strema music (over wifi) from a service like Spotify. The problem with Spotify is that you have to have a premium account in order to use it and I would much rather have a free app. Similarly, last.fm have started charging a monthly subscription and another app I found, Pandora, is available only in the US because of licensing laws.

So, does anyone know of a Spotify-like app for iPod Touches which are free?

Nope sorry..think you would have to pay for the music, not aware of any free replacements in the UK at the moment. Closest would be to stream radio.

It's expensive if you only listen to a few songs a month, but if you use it daily then both spotify and Last.fm are really a bargain to be honest.

Problem is, I wouldn't be using it terribly frequently, only for times when I want to listen to a broader range of music in my flat when I'm not also using my PC (for example, when I do the hoovering!). Such a shame that Spotify don't do a free version with ads like on their desktop version.

Indeed, I agree...its expensive for when yo uonly want to use it occasionally - like I do with Spotify on the PC with the add supported version. I just have to remember to load my iphone up with enough music when I go out now, and delete some of the pointless apps I have so I can make space

If sound over RDP works then that would be quite good though!

    Great idea.

Yea, that was my back up plan if a simple app wasn't available, as seems to be the case. I'll hve a look to see what there is in the way of remote desktop apps and try a couple out.

the whole leave at the remote location thing would be my preferred option, the default sound on a gen 1 ipad was erm, lacking shall we say. That way you can have it running out to some speakers or hifi.

Myself I use a mixture of DLNA and Zune, DLNA if the tune is one in my collection (ie CD ripped, lossless) Zune via a ZunePass for anything else, the ZunePass been quite decent because you can have it on 3 PCs and 3 Devices (ie xbox, wp7, zune) simultaniously. That way you seldom have to use the device, which often have bad audio output, as an analogue source.

Re: iPod apps similar to Spotify

Managed to get my VNC setup working but no audio, and a bit of googling suggests that audio over VNC simply isn't possible. Here's what I found: http://forum.maccast.com/index.php?/...udio-over-vnc/

This needs further investigating which I'll do this evening once I get back from running a couple of errands. According to the link I just posted, SSH will be the next route I look at.

Re: iPod apps similar to Spotify

Grr, this is annoying me now. I'm using an app plus its desktop counterpart called WiFi2HiFi. It streams audio to the iPod when music is playing... in theory. However, it isn't.

It transmits any audio when Windows notices the audio being played through one of my "playback devices" (right click volume icon in tray -> playback devices). Default device is currently set to "Speakers/Asus Xonar DX Audio Device". When, however, I play music via iTunes or Spotify, the sound comes out of the speakers, but it is as if Windows isn't noticing it because the green bars next to the icon start going up and down. The simplest way to prove this is to right click -> test on the default device in the playback menu. It then proceeds to play the little jingle which I can then hear on my iPod via Wifi2Hifi.

When playing music through Spotify or iTunes, the green bar doesn't go up and down as one would expect. In fact, music from these two programs shows up in the "Recording" tab, under both "Wave" and "Stereo Mix". The green bars jump up and down there quite happily, but this is not picked up by my app.

Interestingly, Google Chrome (youtube) sound is acknoledged under the "Wave" and "Stereo Mix" in the recording tab, as well as, importantly, the normal speakers in the playback tab. So, I can hear audio from Chrome over my iPod, but not audio from iTunes or Spotify over my iPod, which to recap, only get picked up in the recording tab.

So why does sound from Chrome go through the playback tab, but the other two programs go only through the recording tab. Running Creative T20 Series 2 speakers through an Asus Xonar DX sound card.

I'm utterly stumped after fiddling with a variety of settings.

Is anything obvious jumping out at anyone?
