    @Saracen and madduckUK - if I may use an Edward-like interjection...."it stops" .

Melody? I would...if only to shut her up for 3 minutes...

Re: Heads Up : The Apprentice .....

The right man definitely went - and you could tell he was definitely going to go from the second he said (paraphrased) "I'm not going to do any planning whatsoever, we're going to go there and magic numbers in the taxi".

Trying not to be a boring accountant or not, 3am or not..there are some basic things that you must do or you are guaranteed to fail..and fail he did.

As has been said though, he would have made it more interesting..the stupid ones always do, it would be a boring show if everyone they put on it was actually a viable candidate, wouldn't it?

I'm pleased it's not turned into the apprentice USA though, the last season of that which the BBC aired was awful..not really even any pretence that it was about the business anymore. The UK one isn't really either, but it does a much better job of pretending!

edit: and Melody? mm yeah who wouldn't [take her out], but not sure I could stand that voice for long...

I thought the (Northern? I'm not good with accents so no offense!) Irish chap did really well. He got bugger all cash, still got a workable deal and delivered without griping about it until it was over.

You're in for a treat with tonight's episode them.

I never thiught I'd say this, but .... I agree with Nick.

I'm talking about Nick Hewer, of course, not whatsisname at the LibDem's, and referring to his "I'm perplexed". So am I. Do people actually buy, or even download for free, the type of drivel these two bunches of muppets plan to peddle? If so, I'm really perplexed.

Then, I think, I agree with Nick again .... I'm too old and it goes right over my head. Thank goodness.

Mind you, I'd have thought anyone over the age of 12 was too old for those apps.

And, finally, before anyone says it, yes, I'm fully aware of the age group of a large chunk of the market for those apps, and yes, I've passed that age, even in my second childhood.

Not really. but as a journalist, I get press briefing, market analysis, and so forth.

Besides, I don't pretend any great knowledge of smartphones or their apps. I also don;t pretend any great interest, but that lack of interest shouldn't be taken to mean I haven't looked, because what I mean is no interest in owning one. That doesn't mean I haven't thought about it, or looked at the products before deciding I'm not interested in owning one ... or more accurately, owning one at the what they cost.

I'm one of those weird, out-of-date old farts that sees a phone, regardless of how smart it is or what it can do, as a tool. And as with any tool, it might be the best tool on the planet and be a great boon for some people, but if it's a tool that does a job you either don't need or don;t want, then it's a tool that's useless to you.

That's pretty much where I am.

All I really want from a mobile phone is what the very first ones did reasonably well, which was to make and receive phone calls. Oh, and a decent phone book, as good a battery life as I can get and, the point where modern phones are SO much better than older ones, be small and light.

The reason is that I use it when it suits me, and don't give the number to all that many people. Or at least, don't give the personal phone number to many. As a result, it often goes days, sometimes weeks, without even being turned on. That is a result of a very conscious decision to be contactable when it suits me, and otherwise, not contactable.

And given that I don't really care even about the more useful apps, that I detest texts, that that I don't want to play games etc or my phone, a smartphone isn't for me. Even the GPS function, while useful on occasion, doesn't interest me because the number of occasions when I'd use it would be tiny.

I don't diss smartphones, or even smartphone apps .... other than those two. And given that they were developed and produced in 24 hours, it'd be a miracle is they were anything other than cheesy and cheap ... in quality, not price. It's just that they aren't for me, but that doesn't mean I didn't look before reaching that conclusion.

And besides all that, the guy on "You've been fired" from Carphone Warehouse made two points that provide all the info needed to say what I suggested, which were :-

    1) Most of the most successful apps are, essentially, clever and/or amusing time-wasters to show off to your friends. There are exceptions, of course.

    2) The bulk of the market is in either kids, or the 16-24 age group.

Gotta love the "Jedi mind trick" moment in the board room. And what was that wink in the end? I've got some more comments about last night's episode, but I'll save it for later.

Re: Heads Up : The Apprentice .....

Wasn't the greatest episode last night - pretty dissapointed with the apps too, especially since it looked like an AIR/Flash app compiled for android/bberry/iphone/anotherOS (it was mentioned that it was "24 hours, 4 platforms"). It's stupidly easy to write applications using that method, and quality ones at that..no more difficult than any flash file.

A sound board is not a bad idea in terms of getting downloads, but was poorly implemented by both sides..however that said, the boy's app was in a different league to the girl's one..it's really amazing that wired decided to feature that one - kinda shoots their credibility and smacks of "well they have to get ONE site at least".

That, combinied with the shocking app description is what lost it for them..but mostly wired's poor choice.

It's only a TV show but this week the wrong team lost..the look of surprise on Alan's face when it was revealed that the girls won was great though..showed what he thought of it/them

interesting, and yet unsurprising that apple did not put the apps up.

mmm. It usually seems ok, but when its something you have knowledge about it feels very dumbed down and has factual errors - wonder if the same applies to the other tasks they do but we just don't notice?

Usually the tasks are about making money. They got free development, free studio time and free publicity, and made a free app. Then Alan bangs on about how anyone can go out and make an app and make money. Also I did like the lack of an iPhone app, because apple take however long they feel like to 'approve' apps before they go on the app store.
