    Pay Peanuts, Get Acer!

Absolutely flabberghasted that they have a single fee for all services, my Revo PC has suffered some kind of hardware failure, I've not even taken the case off, its 17 months old so they want £55 to look at a machine that didn't even cost £175, after a quick chat with an engie we figured it would probably cost £150 to fix.....

I mean I know these things are low cost, but I'd have just thought they'd have offered me a quick swap-a-roodle!

Time to start cracking the device open and seeing what happens if I reset what I can!

So when your paying peanuts, remember you get monkeys.

Also without been a smug git my media PC had a backup that was less than 2 hours old....

    What's wrong with it?

Desktop machines are usually pretty easy to replace hardware in or is it that most annoying of "generic yet unidentified component" fault?

The Revo PCs are small desktops, a single board with soldered CPU etc, its kind of like a cheap-o laptop.

The beep error code is quite un helpful thou, as it could even be just the memory, which is a simple fix.

    Re: Pay Peanuts, Get Acer!

Ah, I concede I googled Revo and it looked like a standard desktop and with you saying there was a case I didn't look further.

Bugger, I guess the theory of swapping parts in from sources known to be good until you find the bad part is out then?

I think we have decided on "Nettop" for those things.

Yup, and acer are some of the biggest monkeys of the lot, well known for their appauling build quality.

Does seem especially mad considering the original price though!

    Re: Pay Peanuts, Get Acer!

We (a school) have got some 80 Acer laptops and I think I've only had one problem with them - with our stupidly cheap Extensa 5220s, where the battery lasted about 10 months before it didn't retain reasonable charge.

Other than that, I've had no issues. We've had a couple go wrong (it happens) and when they have I've dealt with an quick English call-centre and turn-around was decent (around 5 working days each time), though granted the after-care support may be different with business to what it may be for home users.

I have to admit the Extensa's have put me off Acer somewhat, but I'm struggling to think of any other complaints I can have.

Do Acer's still have incredibly bad keyboards? I've never had so many mistypes as when I last used an Acer.

The one included with Revo is totally rubbish, £1 to make at the most.

I wouldn't go to say that.

Ok its not my favourite kind (chunky keys) its just another crappy chicklet style keypad. But its wireless radio, has a good battery life (ie I've never changed the battery), and is OK. Now its a little smaller than a standard, which as a touch typist drives me up the wall. But I would guess it cost a bit more than a quid to make.

Its also by no means the worst keyboard I've had to endure. That belongs to a keyboard someone had bought that was done in a G3 style, copying the worst mouse ever made with a horrible translucent plastic, the membrain was designed with the sole purpose of not letting you know when you had successfully depressed a key.

Thing is we all make compromises about price, and the fact of the matter is I've been unlucky most people's haven't died. Also I could probably fix it if I could find the time, I would put money on it been a simple something isn't properly seated/soldered. But at the price these things are its just easier to buy a new one, and let WHS re-image it for me. Hmm sounds like that is the doorbell.
