CPU's are pretty amazing, but it's flash memory that really stuns me. You can now get a 32GB MicroSD card for about 30 quid- that's 32 billion bytes of data on something that's literally smaller than my thumbnail.
But 32 billion bytes is 256 billion bits- so that's 256 billion individual 0s and 1s stored on something about 1 centimetre square.
But the thing is, I can't help but think we've got our progress a bit arse about face. It costs 30 quid to stick 256 billion flash cells in the palm of someone's hand, but it costs £165,000 to stick 10,000 bits of baked clay to some wood and glass to make the average 3-bed home in this country, or about 6 times the national average wage.
