TBH the state of journalism in this country is frankly appaling (with a few exceptions). Its about time people started voting with thier pockets and stopped buying these sorry excuses for toilet paper.

As you say Cameron has said the right things but with the Met's track record on the phone hacking issue's of the past and the fact Cameron has passed the buck to Jeremy Hunt about the BSkyB bid, you know this is just washing his hands of the issue in case the deal goes ahead regardless.

Ed Milliband has also spoken on the issue, when asked for his reaction to this news he said both sides had betrayed public interest, that parents and the public had been let down by both sides, becuase the government had acted in a reckless and irresponsible manner. He said after today's news both sides should put aside the rhetoric, get around the negociating table and stop this happening again....

Re: Scum of theworld hacked Millie Dowlers phone

Interesting interview with the boss of the Press Complaints Commission on the Daily Politics today. Andrew Neil really gave the dozy cow a hard time. She kept coming up with all the usual platitudes about doing all they can, and giving the press a hard time, and holding the press to account and so on, and he kept asking for just one example of how the PCC had held the NoTW to account, and again and again and again she dodged the question.

Oh, but they've issued "guidelines" and "edicts" .... which, of course, have been ignored with impunity.

And they held an "investigation. Which seems to have gone roughly thus :-

PCC (to NoTW) : "You been up to naughty things again?"

NoTW : "Wot? Us? No, ma'am. 'Course not."

PCC : "That's all right then".

PCC Conclusion : NO evidence of wrong-doing.

And that is perhaps my all time favourite political cop-out ... "we found no evidence of ...."

But did you damn well look properly?

    Or at all?

The PCC boss had to admit she was fuming she'd been "lied to" about the malfeasances. She also said she was a lawyer. Presumably, such a good lawyer she now heads press complaints committee. Maybe she things a thorough police investigation into an armed robbery consists of asking the suspects if they did it and taking their word for it if they deny it, apparently oblivious to the notion that the guilty might actually lie.

I bet he didn't point out that the " reckless and irresponsible" government in question is the one he was part of, or at least, depending on exactly when we're referring to, his party.

Re: Scum of theworld hacked Millie Dowlers phone

I can't help but wonder why mobile companies are still using default passwords on mailboxes.

This could be fixed really quickly. I've seen MP's clamouring with the "something must be done" speeches presumably with a view to doing something about the media via legislation or similar and yet a quick chat with some choice network board members would prevent further exploits pronto.

I actually had no issue with the original voicemail 'scandal', primarily because anyone famous dumb enough to use a default password was just a plonker...but this instance is so very different.

Edit: I've just checked and vodafone block access from other lines until a code is set. Perhaps my post above is redundant?

I had understood it was a simple case of trying default numbers to gain access, am I misinformed or are some networks different?

Gawd, do you have that running on loop? You're getting stuck in the past you know.

It's the people in power you should keep an eye on like Mr Clegg who looks more like a beaten up punch bag everyday. It's too hard for you Nick, go back to the farm or whatever it is you do.

Well I know that with this being a newspaper that it may be difficult to actually prove who did it, but we all know that the newspaper itself is accountable.

It is a criminal offence to interfere with a police investigation, and if no single person is to be charge, then the newspaper as a whole should be (I'm thinking multi-million dollar fines here - something that will really make the paper hurt!)

This makes me wonder too, the police knew messages were being deleted, but were unable to find out why/by whom? Really? I mean REALLY? I doubt it.

I wonder just how deep these ties run - I have serious doubts this would be possible for this story to only break now, without prior police knowledge/blind eye of the event at the time.

The notion of CID sitting there faced with disappearing voicemails and doing nothing is bonkers.

If anyone is stuck in a loop over the phrase "reckless and irresponsible", it'll be Ed Miliband, not me. Did you see the video of his interview where he managed to say "reckless and irresponsible government" 5 times in response to 5 different questions.

I would also point out that I'm not aware of him using that phrase in this context, other than the post above alleging he did. But if he did, then as I said, it all happened under a government run first by Blair, then Brown, of which he was a part for a good while.

If, as was suggested above, he's blaming a "reckless and irresponsible government" for events that happened in, what 2002/2003, then it certainly cannot be laid at the door of the current government, and it makes him look like a right pratt if he tries to do that. I haven't yet seen him try.

Also, of course, despite my anger and that of the public, and for that matter that of serving politicians, they do have to be a bit careful what they say because, first, all I know of at this point is newspaper allegations, and evidence may or may not bear them out. Indications are that it will, not least because the guardian is going to be terribly red-faced (not to mention, probably sued) if it turns out to be false. And they also have to be careful, very careful indeed, because of on-going police investigations The last thing we want is politicians with size 16 feet trampling all over, and wrecking, any possible prosecutions.

Because if this is true, I'd like to see those responsible strung up by the gonads, using barbed wire, over a slow-burning barbecue, and medium roasted. And then, once cooked, we could get unpleasant with them.

If we can just make them all share a cell with David Charlton that will do.

As I've heard Ed described.... the "Tory's secret weapon", 'cos it keeps David out. Thinking about it, maybe I ought to join a union.
