OfCom starting to fine scamming Believe TV

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/23/believe_tv/

So this is a TV channel which encourages viewers to throw away their prescription medicine and instead buy their olive oil, or other such stupid.

Now a couple of things here, I can't imagine if it wasn't for the god angle that OfCom would be going so softly softly with them, they are flouting too many of the rules!

But secondly, is it actually a bad thing, we remove a vulnerable sure, but ultimately gullible percentage of the population?

To be consistent they should be banning any advertising whatsoever of homeopathy.

Re: OfCom starting to fine scamming God Channel

I did like a comment on El Reg which was in reply to someone saying why isn't there a homeopathic channel, they suggested there already is, on every channel, 0.000001% of the signal comprises it....

Re: OfCom starting to fine scamming God Channel

advertising a cure for cancer is specifically banned by the Cancer Act 1939, and in February the channel met with Ofcom and promised not to do it again.
you would think if they had the cure for cancer they would be allowed to advertise it

btw, when i read "scamming god channel" i thought this thread was about channel 5

Re: OfCom starting to fine scamming God Channel

I think you will find that The Register is referring to Believe TV not The God Channel in its report. AFAIK, The God Channel has not been implicated in any OFCOM investigation.

The title thread has been amended accordingly.

More details here... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/me...m-2341970.html although I'm not sure that the fact the Ofcom is fulfilling its statutory duty is particularly newsworthy, except that it is generally perceived as rather toothless, and here it is (rightly) exercising the powers that it has.

Given that some of terminally ill people will try this as an attempt to get cured from whatever disease they have it's a pretty sad thing in fact

Re: OfCom starting to fine scamming Believe TV

ah the title was my bad, I didn't realise there was a channel called the god channel, I was merely saying that OfCom were finally taking action against a religious channel.

The reason this is worthy for general discussion is that it has taken so long. It is worrying that under the guise of religion of which, no matter how much you believe in one, you must admit there is a lot of silly stuff in the others, things that make no sense, and are often designed to make profit for the establishment.

As such OfCom shouldn't treat them any differently from the way they tackle the late night gambling channels.

Re: OfCom starting to fine scamming Believe TV

I dunno - Gambling and Religion are very different.

One tries to get simple minded people to part with their money, by using their faith and good will.

The other is based on relgion.
