    4gb dual channel crashing windows

    I have 2 x G-Skill TR Serise DDR2 1100 /PC2 8800 sticks

system was running fine for few months and then this happend...

while playing COD4, screen went red/pinkish and system restart
same thing happened while playing WoW and Witcher

i thought it was the video card. its not it.
figured maybe its the raid being iffy, moved all the files to the another Hard disk. still the same
    repaired/reinstalled everything same

    did prime95 all works

    ran memtest.... restarted at 48%.

i took 2gb stick A out. did the test. all fine
put stick A in. removed stick B. all fine.

got my old ram sticks (1gbx2)
removed both sticks put 1gb x 2 on dual channel -> works fine
put 1gbx2 as single channel -> works fine

put the 2gbx2 as single channel -> system restart at 48%

i have no idea whats wrong.

the 2gb2x fails when they are working together (single and dual channel)
i tried swapping around the sticks on the 4 slots. still the same

the mainboard i have is Asus P5NE-SLI

video card is not on SLI its a single 280GTX

anyone have any idea on whats going on?

Re: 4gb dual channel crashing windows

Have you tried forcing the RAM to 800MHz instead of letting it detect?

Might be that with both sticks and a very high memory clock, the memory controller is having issues.

set the clock to 800 still no good.

    tried useing 2gbx1 + 1gbx1

memetest went pass 48% i didnt complete the whole test. however while loading windows BSD n restart

could this be a motherboard issue?

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit Windows?

Re: 4gb dual channel crashing windows

I've got the same mobo as you. When I built it, I purchased four 1GB modules. However everytime I tried to use all four it would result in alot of BSOD's and restarts. Took out my last module and has been working smoothly ever since. No idea what the problem was. Tried all of the usual swapping sticks ect...
    Might be mobo related.

Re: 4gb dual channel crashing windows

yeah i had the same issue.

theres a QVL on the asus site, those sticks you can use on all 4 slots.
this is why i went and grabbed 2x2gb. it was fine untill 2 days ago

i fully tested the ram modules on a different machine with memtest. running a full test.
they passed individually but if i put use both. it fails at 48%

i didnt up the voltage as it was working fine before.

    im running win7-64bit

i was runnin the system on my old ram 3x 1GB
while playing WoW same thing happened. apart from the fact that memtest is failing at 48%
could this be a GPU related issue?

speedfan says GPU is idling at 50-51C and 78-81C on load

Re: 4gb dual channel crashing windows

I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong, but I seem to remember somebody saying how GPU's can often reach rather extreme temperatures. For your card, the 280GTX, idling around 50/55C is normal. As is it reaching up to around 85C under load.
