    Light breeze leads to aborted landing

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14906539

    I didn't think aborted landings were all that rare; I don't fly that much so I've never experienced one, although I don't think many pilots get a wheel on the ground before deciding "**** this I'm out of here" (I'm sure the pilots here will correct me if that's untrue).

    Still, that's not a crosswind... THIS is a crosswind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b43lAoovqd8

    Let the oneupmanship begin...
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: Light breeze leads to aborted landing

    I was once on a passenger jet that got hit by a huge gust just a few seconds before we were going to touch down on the runway - the wing dropped down by about 30 degrees I would guess, and then stabilised before we landed.

    Had we been a bit closer to the ground, I suspect it could've been messy. That was probably one of the worst flights I've been on for turbulence though.

    Re: Light breeze leads to aborted landing

    Oh hell I've aborted plenty myself!

    Thing is you look at the video (shorter version)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-14898746
    Look at the windsock.....

    Now if thats 60knot ghusts, then thats one hell of a cross wind. Don't know the cross wind operating limits they have, but looking at the video, in retrospect, the pilot shouldn't have tried.

    Surprised he managed to get the tub back into the air, if the pilot was cleared for landing though is it down to the tower or him?

    Always the pilot in command.

    The PIC can and legally must ignore any instruction from ground if its dangerous.

    You're lucky you're flying today and not yesterday or monday. There were 72mph winds at Glasgow airport then, it's calm now but we had hurricane weather for the last few days

    Re: Light breeze leads to aborted landing

    Just out of interest, seeing as Britain has a prevailing wind from the South West, do airports orientate the runways to be pointing north east in order to minimise crosswinds?

    Winds aloft and surface winds are seldom the same!

    Most airfields I fly from have general trends, at EGLD for instance is almost always 240, the wind, is generally between 220 and 290, so it has a very little cross wind. They also have a grass strip which can be used if the wind isn't co-operating.... But 9 times out of 10 its 240. When its not 240, 9 times out of 10 its 060, or the same runway backwards, seldom is the cross wind more than a few degrees, and as such the grass strip is almost always un used.

    Thats just how it blows round there!
