Look at what the cat's dragged in (crawlies)...

The cat was sat on my lap earlier, and when she got off I had about 10-15 of these on me, the question is, what are 'these'?

They're about 3mm in length and appear quite flat...

'They' are fleas...wasn't that the first thing you though of?

Brilliant, did think that was the case but was in denial as I'm annoyed at the 'next step'...getting rid!

How the hell... What extent do you go to? I'm imagining anything that the cat has had contact with needs a good wash/spray/disinfection...

For example, if the cats been on the bed, does the actual duvet need washing, or just the cover?

    Curtains? Carpet cleaners?

You kind of have to break the flea cycle*, treating your cat, the environment & so on. http://www.cats.org.uk/uploads/docum...rparasites.pdf

Frontline 'Spot-on' was the best & easiest flea product, I used to find for my cat. It goes on the back of their neck and is not stressful for them. Much better than flea collars & whatnot (your vet would advise you if there is any reason why one product would be better/more suitable for your cat than another).

*pretty much as you've edited. Definitely carpets etc.

We use Frontline and Drontal regularly (so confused how she's carrying fleas!) but I've given her another Frontline tonight...

Just ordered some Indorex spray and will give the house (another) good seeing to!

Hope we manage to get things sorted, I just imagine this is going to be a nightmare!

If your cat doesn't mind being brushed (will sit still) you can use a flea/nit comb and catch the little blighters, keep a glass of water next to you, comb, look if there's fleas, if there is grab it/them tight (you won't crush them) get them in the water immediately and drown them as they are too tough to squash. You have to be quick as they can jump (really far) and you may have to physically drown them in the water as they are very resilient.

You need to flea spray anywhere (fabric like a bed/rug/carpet) that the cat regularly sits for long enough to make a warm patch as that will make the eggs hatch, gross but true.

Ah, right, sorry, guess that could have sounded like telling you the obvious. If she's just picked a few up somewhere the problem should be containable, what with everything you're already doing.

Re: Look at what the cat's dragged in (crawlies)...

When my cats got fleas I had a bit of a freak out - I hate crawley things. I used frontline combo - this kills the eggs aswell as the adult fleas whereas frontline spot-on only kills adult fleas. I also used a spray called 'indorex'; you spray the entire house with this. It kills all adult fleas lurking in carpets etc aswell as any eggs. It will kill eggs for up to 12months.

Even will all this - its is quite likely you will being seeing the odd flea for a few weeks as they all hatch. This is normal.

Is it inevitable that a cat will get fleas? Specifically, even indoor cats....?

My cats are indoor cats, but i think mine caught them at the vets. Bear in mine you can drag fleas in on your clothes from other places.

Re: Look at what the cat's dragged in (crawlies)...

    Cheers everybody.

I did think they were fleas and I have got bites (any recommendations for the bites? they're itchy as! I've been using afterbite & sudocrem), was bitten a few times about 2 weeks ago, but as said, we couldn't see anything so was a bit in denial...

Yesterday though, I actually saw the crawlies and that was enough, out with the Frontline (she was only done on the 1st of October!) and out with the hoover... I've ordered 2 cans of Indorex and we've set out a battle plan in regards to what to wash etc, though I suspect we'll probably miss something!

That is strange that the Frontline is not working. Maybe try a different brand of flea treatment?

Good luck! Fleas are a pain in the proverbial!

Re: Look at what the cat's dragged in (crawlies)...

The frontline may be working, but the fleas have to bite the cat before they die. There have been stories of frontline not working aswell as it has done, but unless the house has been treated spot on treatments will only take you so far.

Keep checking their water bowl its usually a good indicator of how many are dying off.

Tip - its worth washing your bedding in a high temp wash as it will kill anything on there. Just don't do as I did and put your wifes favorite pair of jeans in there too!

Re: Look at what the cat's dragged in (crawlies)...

I'm pretty sure our family cat caught fleas from the vet too, despite being an outdoor cat he's been flea free about 4 years and fortunately he's only had flees once as a kitten.

We tried several drops and sprays but ultimately flea pills worked for us, the cat wouldn't eat them from the food bowl so we held his mouth open like the vets advised, dropped the pill in his mouth and rubbed his throat to get him to swallow. We vacummed the house daily and once the pills kicked in there were dead fleas everywhere.

Anthisan for the bites. Works like a charm. Good for all kinds of horrid bitey insect bites.
