When you say trace do you mean trace as in get the location of the mobile i.e using websites such as http://www.childlocate.co.uk/ to get the general location of the mobile ( down to 100m ) or do you mean like check the number to see who its registered to etc ?

Bobby, IIRC Orange have their own directory service for mobile users. Although it was voluntary to have your number publicised, (I didn't).

Please forgive me but I cannot remember the number, sorry. I'm sure someone who's on Orange will get it for you though

    HTH

*edit* "Can I request any numbers from 118 000?
You can request up to three numbers per call, from all listed UK residential and business landline numbers as well as registered Orange numbers."

They've gone all '118'!!! And if you do decide to ring them...

Calls to 118 000 from an Orange phone are charged at 59p per call. And if you'd like us to connect you to your number the remainder of your call will be charged at 30p per minute. All prices include VAT.

You can call Orange 118 000 from any phone. Calls from BT landlines cost 49p for the first minute and 20p per minute thereafter, subject to a minimum of 49p. Other operator services and charges vary. Please check with your supplier for details of call connect charges.

Thats gotta get me some reputation?

well it is down to 100m so if its local go and pop to where it is to see who it is Thing is the mobile gets an SMS to see if it will accept this "tracing" and you have to reply in order to allow it so if they ignore the txt then the tracing will not work.

All I can think is leave a message on the voicemail... Something on the lines of, I dunno, maybe "Hi, you left your rubber gimp suit round mine - give us a call", or whatever you might think suitable

Trouble is text can be ignored. Especially if they get wind your fishing. I would phone up, and with a little fib say that their number "has come up on my phone, I think I may have missed your call. I didn't? Are you sure? Well who is this anyway?"
