Don't blame religion for the worlds problems, blame people. Once people stop hiding behind excuses the world will become a better place IMHO.

    Re: I hate religion.

All common religions I know of have peace at their core, I had a nice conversation with a Muslim guy in town on the subject. He wasn't trying to convert me, rather he was explaining the true values of Islam, making an effort to be heard amongst the ignorance. Religion is no excuse for wars, no God would smile down on it.

    Re: I hate religion.

No religion has peace at it's core.

Look at the Ten Commandments and what happened in Exodus as soon as god's 'chosen' people got them. The Pentateuch is littered with examples of horrific violence.

Their modern interpretation, I mean. Religions encourage people to respect one another, help the less fortunate and so on.

Gods people actually believe in, excluding those strange upstart religions, of course. What I said is being taken out of context.

It's not often you get someone blaming their bloodlust on the Norse God of thunder, is it?

Not really. I don't know of a holy book that encourages respect for people of other religions. Respect for people comes from morality and experience.

Helping the less fortunate? Is the Catholic Church a force for good in Africa?

    Which strange upstart religions?

    Scientology?
    Mormonism?
    Islam?
    Christianity?
    Judaism?

They were all strange upstart religions when you go back far enough.

    Re: I hate religion.

I know exactly what you meant. The problem here is that, from the outside looking in, all these religions are crazy. With added insane and wrong. You can't give any of them more respect for being around longer.

A lot of old texts where written almost as metaphors so only the initiated would understand them, I suspect that between that and politics i.e. banning or obscuring of scripts like Judas Gospels much of what is commonly known today as religion is barely recognizable compared to what it originally was , at least western.

There are some religions like Shamanism for one which predates everything and has attracted much scientific interest by luminaries such as Terence McKenna
