Some git pinched my domain name!

I had the name www.kfcworld.co.uk my mate purchased it for me and I had this joke KFC web site up and running which had 50k worth of hits, which is a fair few for a so called joke site. Anyhow it ran out in March/April and my friends company was not notified, we should take some of the blame may I add… anyhow someone has it now and is trying to sell it! Little bugger!

People do that... just buy up any domains that have expired. Did it to me too. It's just a complete pain in the arse.

I had exactly the same thing happen before, host was meant to auto renew but didnt and lost it for it to become a advert haven. Don't think there is a list of recently expired domain names so to speak. I suppose they just come across popular sites that are awaiting renewal by the owner or in the redemption period, do a quick whois and buy them as soon as they expire, playing on the fact the owner may forget / not what to renew and using the popularity of the site that the domain pointed to before to bring people to the adverts making them as much money as possible.

it's a tough trade! - you should only have ONE company that can buy and sell names... would stop all these cowboys!

But then the company can raise the prices for a domain name by a lot, and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

Ouch. A company of mine in the making had our domain poached while we were trying to transfer registrars. God knows how they did it, but we ended up forking out US$75 to get it back. Bastards!

It used to be like that, Bobby. And it cost $70 for two years. Though if you're willing to spend that kind of money on a domain, you may as well just buy it back from the poacher.

i wonder what can be done then?

My friend purchased the name through his web design company and instructed the registrar to renew the domain name well in advance… but they failed to.

My friend has brought 100’s of domains and this has happened to him a few times before.

    Not good.
