Personally I think we bring this on ourselves.
I recently came across the quote "Tolerance of intolerance is cowardice", by
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a woman with a fascinating life story.
For most of us, our first experience of Islam's intolerance was probably the murder threat against Salman Rushdie (an author and winner of a Man Booker prize and the Booker of Bookers). What is less known is how many people (translators and publishers) associated with his books have been
murdered.
There are many other instances of this kind of intolerance. The murder of
Theo Van Gough is known by many, but the details of the brutality are less well known (killer stabbed a multi-page death threat into his chest !)
The
attack on a Danish magazine is well known, but it's less well known that it escalated into an attack and boycotting of the whole of Denmark. It's also less well known that this kind of silencing of publications is still very active. A
magazine in Paris was petrol bombed just 4 months ago !
Our reaction to
all these attack is one of cowardice. People are terrified to speak out against Islamic intolerance, just in case it results in an attack. Even this thread contains an example of that fear
Don't get me wrong, this isn't an attack on Hicks12, he was probably worried about the reaction of the mods, if he didn't show deference to that stupid book.
Did you recognise what they were saying as they kicked over those grave stones ? Rest assured, they were saying exactly the same as they flew those planes into the twin towers and detonated their bombs on 7/7.
Here's another article with some
clear pictures of the aftermath. I wonder if those brave young men, who died in 1943, would expect us to be so reverential of quran !
