Apparantley it's never happened, but the worry was real. It has been known for high energy electromagnetic fields to cause fuel explosions.

Hehe! I think all this started because somebody decided to test for a risk from mobile phones, knowing that things like aircraft search radars at close range can (and has) ignite fuel, only to find that there was not enough energy in the field created by a mobile phone to cause and explosion. The press heard about these tests and started scaremongering (as usual!) in order to sell papers.

It is the radiation! It is the electromagnetic force that was the worry. Then that was proven almost impossible from a mobile phone due to the power levels involved.
