Tesco petrol stations & open net connections

Well some of you may have seen me post this before, so I go to get some petrol in my local Tescos and I notice much to my suprise (yeah right) a wireless access point fixed to the wall ( this was also noted at the local Cardiff Bay Tescos many moons ago hence previous post mention) and again the WEP light (encryption light) was off.

In your opinion are they at risk of people leeching their bandwidth?

If so may buy a house in that locality

Seems strange that they allow wireless access points near their forecourts, but not mobile phones which work on a similar frequency! With all that huge risk of explosions and all from your mobile!

LOL that theory has been well and truely disproved now with the better quality mobiles which use much lower voltages. There is a huge debate at the moment about mobiles being used in hospitals by doctors for communicating rather than by pagers - and the people championing for this are doctors themselves ( see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3856845.stm )

Anyway, back on topic - I'll check tonight as I live about 300m from a tesco petrol station and I'll borrow a wi-fi card from the techies @ work

Did anyone see the show brainiac on sky one? Basically a science show but in a fun silly way to do all experiments.

They tested the mobile phone in a petrol station thing by putting like 20 mobiles into a caravan that was toatally doused with petrol. They then rang all the phones. Nothing happened.

However, they then attached a thin piece of long wire into the caravan and ran it a long way away and touched it onto a man wearing a shell suit and building up friction on a carpet or something. As soon as they touched the man with the wire - the caravan blew up.

From this i deduce mobile phones are phone at petrol stations, but Shell suits are not Sorry Liverpudlians

I know! It was to do with the electromagnetic waves being able to ignite petrol, nothing to do with voltages. But the radiation from a mobile phone is not strong enough. However the radiation from a radar is enough at close range!

Also, the radiation from a wireless access point will be greater than that from a mobile....

Its not the waves that cause the flashpoint to ignite its the small electricty used to light the backlight and operate the ring tone which causes the spark

i always thought the spark was when you turn it on, from the connection to the power button making a spark to empower the system, but there not dangerous as it was only ooooooooold phones that did it, newer ones use a different method, and that was only used in the first few mobiles that were as big as cars anyway :hehe:

It is the radiation! It is the electromagnetic force that was the worry. Then that was proven almost impossible from a mobile phone due to the power levels involved.

Oh BTW, I am about to enter my final year studying a degree in electronic and electrical engineering.....

The older (read: analogue) phones gave out a much higher level of electromagnetic radiation.
