    Do you earn enough?

    Hi guys

Bit risky this thread but I thought it worth asking, because we're moving, politically and fiscally through some crazy times:

It's a hard one to answer.. so please bear it in mind for a while before answering.

I'm NOT asking do you earn what you're worth, nor and I asking do you earn what you deserve. Those are both for a different day... a different question.

    Simply: DO YOU EARN ENOUGH?

not to go on holiday and buy a new car. not to smoke yourself silly and drink yourself into a blurr every night.

    DO YOU EARN ENOUGH?

can you live, sensibly and within your means? can you, litereally, manage comfortably, with a few small luxuries healthily, happily and with some sense of security?

We all WANT more.. we can all SPEND MORE... but that's not it.

DO YOU EARN ENOUGH in your own mind?

    Re: Do you earn enough?

I earn approx 30% more than i technically need to pay the basic bills/food etc. I'm actually looking at getting a job that pays less but allows me to spend more time with my family so I'm probably in an enviable position although I dont see it like that

For the hours I work to get the salary I do... Just isn't enough. I work for one of the big 4 supermarkets in the UK as a department manager and they pay the lowest of the 4. I've thought about jumping ship but I guess it's a "is the grass greener on the other side".

Pretty much the same situation as this. No kids and both me and the mrs are full time employed.

We do have a few luxuries and it enables us to save a little.

Although I am thinking of giving up one of my current hobbies of English sporting shooting, as prices are getting silly now and the money could be put to better use else where. The thing is, is that I don't know if I can afford to do it any more or not. You keep hearing on the TV, radio and pretty much any newspaper you look at, about what state the country is in and sometimes I do feel guilty for spending my own money.

    Re: Do you earn enough?

I've always earned enough. I've always been able to pay my bills.

I haven't always been able to have any luxuries. When I first started in aviation, times were very, very, hard, and I lived paycheck to paycheck. I was once paid $180 for two weeks work! I got a second job driving a Taxi. You do what you have to, and don't make excuses. Actually I still drive a car I paid $500 for when I was just starting out in this career. It's a car, gets me to work, and I could afford insurance, etc.

It's a career. You can't expect to start on a 100K salary. You work your ass off, learn, build experience, and achieve what you want in time. I've been through a couple of other jobs over the last few years, earning more with each move. I started a new job last month, which has literally trebled my income overnight. My experiences of living on a small budget are certainly going to be beneficial long term. If I project a 10% increase in my day-to-day expenditures to allow for an increase in quality of life, I'll still have ~80% of my income as discretionary. That's a good feeling, believe me.

I have a desire for very expensive toys. The kind which need a hangar.

If you don't earn enough to pay your bills, it's your own fault. Reduce your bills, drive a cheaper car, ditch the smartphone, and living on minimum wage is easy. Then all you have to do is work at it to increase your income.

Yes. I do application consultancy for a software firm and its enough to mean that we are safe in terms of mortgage food and bills. We have a 18 month boy so food bills are mostly for him. Apart from that we both try to save for him and us. Neither of us go out clubbing or drinking much now, and my biggest vice is computer bits (Hence me looking at new GPUs as we speak!). Overall, boringly sensible. What happened to me!!!

I shoot as well. The hunting side of things is basically free, have permission with some friends on a bit of land. My hobby of fullbore shooting is relatively cheap when compared to golf or going to the gym.

I've had the chance to go "rough shooting" a few times in the past and I loved it. I've not been lucky enough to find anyone willing to let me use their land as of yet though. I'm in a waiting list to join a local syndicate but that's not going to be cost free.

I doubt very much I will give up shooting altogether as I enjoy it to much I may have to reduce it to just getting out a couple of times a month. A days shooting usually costs me around £70-80, doing that 4-5 times a month adds up. I know I'm lucky to be able to afford do it in the first place.

I would say I earn just about enough, i pretty much budget myself every month and stop myself buying stuff I dont need.
Has been a little tougher since getting my car, but paying the insurance off in one go helped otherwise id struggle.

    Re: Do you earn enough?

I'm single, live on my own with two dogs and have a a mortgage. I earn just over £1000 a month and scrape by with the help of an overdraft and by doing writing and technical help on the side....

I think I could easily tip over the edge if I wasn't such a tight-wad.

    Re: Do you earn enough?

    80GBP buys me 500 rounds of .223 or about 700 9mm.

I can shoot almost anywhere on public land, disused rock quarry's being commonly used.

Just in case you wanted to know.
