Not having a go Kezzer, but i've heard some people before saying they don't need AV because they know computers well, so do i, but better safe than sorry, but still.. it's not like you can tell if you download something off the internet and know if its a virus or not, well i guess it depends, but in some cases you may not know.

Anyway, better safe than sorry i say, even if it does slow my computer down a little .

Yeh but i'm very careful as to what i download. I never download anything which i don't know exactly what it is or if it's not trusted. I mean, what dodgy software or anything would i have to download that would cause me to get viruses? I download drivers and legitimate software, and that's about it.

KeZZeR - I don't want to get at you, as I know you think you're right and we're wrong. I've seen this argument loads of times here, and it never ends in a solution. Could you maybe just do 1 thing? Download a free anti virus program (AVG or anything), run it, and tell us the results. I'm just saying that if you run it just once, and you DO find something (I'm not saying you will), then maybe you'd have one for life after that. If you don't find anything after that, then fine - you maybe right.

I, like many other people think I know how to run a PC, but as above, I'd rather be safe than sorry .

Its actually quite irresponsible to not use av in my opinion as you could be spreading viri and worms to other ppl, I suppose its a bit like not wearing a condom. Sort of.

I guess, but even still, things can get through sometimes. Even i sometimes manage to get these damn java exploit viruses, they don't seem to get very far though, antivirus blocks them (yes i'm using firefox too).

I don't have any AV software installed, but I do run Housecall every now and then. I keep my computer spyware free weekly, I am behind a hardware firewall (Netgear DG834) which works very well and I haven't had any virii on my PC for about 6 months. I'm well overdue for a re-install though, normally once a month but lack of 2nd HDD (went in my missus' PC) is making backing up a pain in the ass.

Oh, and whoever said about having background programs running will affect performance in games, I don't run ANY game without first shutting down nearly all background programs, including F@H, keyboard and mouse software and MSN.
