http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~jms501/desktoppage.png - 430k png. the panel at the bottom left is the best ye're getting. i've rearranged slightly since then, but at the time, the buttons are for: gnome-terminal, mozilla-firefox, mozilla-thunderbird, xchat, gaim, rhythmbox, ut2004. followed by a mini command line, volume control, system monitor, network monitor, settings, lock screen, logout, system tray (gaim, ksensors, rhythmbox), and a date/time.
of course, there's the debian menu if i right-click on the desktop, but that's automatically categorised & sorted.
Not got a clue, try their forums.
All I know is that it's a complete rewrite, and should be cheap to upgrade if you own Aston 1.x

Basic, but it works
Pretty standard stuff, mine doesn't tend to get too messy

So what exactly does aston do that windows can't easily do by itself, other than skinning? I love the alternate menu thing yuo've got going on there though!

Well, its plugin support is great. There's system monitors, winamp controllers, active desktop (apparantly better than the windows version, but I don't use it) and so on...
It's a lot more tweakable, but what I really like is the stability. Too many times have I seen "explorer.exe has encountered an error..." but now explorer isn't the shell, and is only active when folder browsing.

It's a bit hard to read 'cos I wasn't expecting it to grab both monitors (Doh).
Note also the artisically messy habit of dumping any and all files on the desktop

Sorry guys but it is stupid question time! How do I create new sub menus in the start menu ie games, tools, office etc?

right click on All Programs, and Explore or Explore All Users (some icons are user specific, some are not). make folders, move stuff about, etc, as you see fit
