Thread: no start bar or task manager

    no start bar or task manager

    just reformatted due to messed up files and rebooting my machine after about 5 mins saying something about rpc
    so now ive done a format and i have no start bar

    its to do with BT mate,
    i just been fittin a BT broadband in, and it came up with RPC shutdown, 1:00 minute remains, so i then eventually tried the firewall, bingo! it did the trick
    p.s. it was the xp built in firewall
    AMD 64 3400, Geforce FX 5800, 2x 80GB HDD, ASUS K8V Deluxe, Kingston PC3200 1GB valueram.

    what OS are you running? have you applyed the latest SP? created a new user account?

    dam ive had to reinstall
    didnt know it was the firewall for xp
    it really was annoying cause u hardly had chance to type stuff on here beofre it shuts down so i thought - - - it
    and reformat again

    mine is disabled for the xp firewall
    if i isntall zone alarm will that block it?
    its doing my heading rebooting all the time

    no its not...its a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishing virus! i reinstalled windows and my task barr has gone as well. rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishing grrr i'm well pissed off

    Its not a virus, its a security vunerability within XP.

    There is another thread over in software forums that details fixes for it.

    Its not limited to BT either, its a worldwide issue.

    Just because you have a virus doesn't mean that the virus is causing the problem you speak of, some viruses are next to harmless.

    Had that problem yesterday, it's a DCOM problem that causes an overflow in the RPC

    The link above provides the official patch for it.

    Damn them script kiddies..

    If you have problems getting to it due to the RPC problem, make sure you have a firewall running
    Quoth the server... "404"

    infect computers scanning yours are causing buffer errors, and/or your computers are infected. Get the patch from MS or the removal tool from symantec!!!
