Haha, that tumblr is amazing
AFAIK only the vector maps came from TomTom, with much of the location-specific stuff, and the searching in particular, being Apple in-house or via several other third-party suppliers (like the aerial photography, which is very low-res in some areas). I'd guess TomTom users will still be fine, as they won't ask their TomTom the way to the nearest Apple store (although I should point out that I've never used a SatNav in my life, so I could be making false assumptions here... ).
I read someplace that only USA vector mapping data came from TomTom.
Hence the problem with a certain british town, which isn't an issue for TomTom users.

So it would seem that they have cobbled together map data from lots of different providers and not done a very good job or sanity checking or verifying said data.

Gives an example of why I'd never buy Apple anything, take away a service that is well liked, replace it with something much cheaper.

What gets me is why have they released it in such a poor state? They had a very good map service provided by Google, they werent in a rush to beat someone to it as they already had Google providing for their users, they had unlimited time as it wasnt hurting them, having a good map application from Google doesnt make you automatically go for Android or something , they should have taken another year or so developing it.
The argument for Apple saying Google has had many years of dev and experience thats why its so much better is silly, they werent forced to release a half arsed product, they werent in competition they joined the market in their own time and got it wrong.
They shouldnt be so arrogant.
The options they have is to either buy in more data or to hire thousands of people and spend years collecting their own data.
Or simply live with an inferior product. Well Apple already do that in a lot of instances anyway, so I suspect this is what they will do.
or they hate anything not Apple. They already started to cut down their dependance on Samsung for example for their products
