    telephone scam scam scam!

the other day my g/f got a calll on her phone which she answered and got a pre-recorded voice
"hello, congratulations! you've just won a fantastic prize [from a holiday to cheap tacky necklace] etc..."
she didn't listen long though as, being enquisitive I asked her when she picked up who it was - a mate of hers or someone like that - thankfully she started to repeat o me what she heard and I immediately told her to hang up, so in total I guess it lasted not more than 30secs.
It had scam all over it and I'm sure there was something funny going on cause a) pre-recorded voice and b) how random is it to be told you've won a holiday/something with out actually initiating anything in the first place?

I'm sure t was one of those scams that keeps you listening whilst raping you for all your pennies. watch out!

on another completely unrelated issue I was talking to smeone the other day on my mobile, orange, and half way through the conversation I heard a ringing and a woman pick up and say 'hello?' - WTF??!! GET THE HELL OUT OF MY PHONE CALL! 'who is this? naff off' - i then get cut off from who ever I was talking to. now here's the weird part, what this thing happened my mate could hear this other woman as well...
so its as though someone cut into the call and split both users off and then left them disconected. I am calling orange to complain.

It is a scam, but you can't get charged for a call which you receive. You'd have to call them back on their number to find out what prize you'd won for it to cost you anything.

either way I thought it safer for the g/f to hang up rather than fatally press any buttons.
you know how they are sometimes...

there's the same sort of scam where they call you up with a prerecorded message and when you hang up the message is still going strong 5 mins later or however long the message lasts. They *can* (or so i'm told) connect you to some place half way across the planet and charge you at international rates if you hang on long enough to the end of the message, but i've never done it so i dunno.

yeah, I wasn't going to let her chance it either. its not like she's utterly clueless but when you get faced with something like that you need to think fast, and more often than not when the phone rings you're doing something else...takes a brief moment to switch to engage just you ears above all rather than all of the other senses...so it could have been expensive but hoping not so thanks to my quick thinking and her obedience - no thats the wrong word, but you know what I mean - trusting me about it. there thats better i think.

ah man, i just got one of these calls like 5 mins ago!

this one was quite convincing actually....got me on hold for 40secs!

The woman voice was in a background of talking...like a call centre to make it more 'realistic' i think.

Usually i get the 'robot/computer' automated voice.

We get them quite a lot recently actually. It will play the recorded message twice them just go silent. I just left in on hands free to see. You are meant to call them back on a premium rate £1.50 a minute number.
