Pocket PCs are electronic, not mechanical. What i had in mind was a simple guide rope with a ring going around it and tied to the person. Ravens_Nest was about right.

Thing is minders can relay information on how fast everyone else is going... and help win race through intelligent pacing...

Wheelchair high diving, ever watched that? I Feel really guilty saying this as I've worked with a few disabled peeps and they were all really nice to work with, but paraplegic diving has to be one of the funnyest things I've ever seen.

Wheelchair strapped to the top of the ledge, bloke sat in it grips the arms, rocks back and forth a few times, and hurls himeself off. Laughing so hard you never notice the bloke doing 15 somesaults with 8 1/2 twists, despite having no legs.
So his struggle to overcome his condition and be the best he can be acts as a source of amusement for you?

    Thats pretty pathetic tbh

Can't believe I missed that! With no legs, his potential for incredible spins and somersaults must be greatly increased as far as I can see.

    Anyway, obligatory Ricky Gervais quote:

"I don't know why they bother holding any events at the Paralympics; after all, they're all winners".

How about a groove in the track. Like a massive scalextric track.

Sorry Didn't mean to offend them, but I seem to have offended you more. Like I said I've worked with a few disabled people at a Sailing school I work at, and they were usually the first to acknowledge and even take the mik out of thir own disablities.

The one's I've known have wanted to be treated equally, and that includes having friends tease them, and they give as good as they get. The last thing they want is for able people to stand up for them, or to be coo'ed over and mollycoddled. I'm thinking particularly of a guy who used to regularly fall over because he has a muscle wasting condition (can't remember which one), he hated it if we rushed over all concearned and helped him up. He could help himelf up and if it was funny would far rather we laughed.

Besides he would spend the whole week knocking us into the water every chance he got because the wheelchair boat we use deosn't have a second seat for an instructor, so we used to have to hang on anywhere we could. Him: evil grin, quick gybe. Me Boom in the back of the legs, splash. Him Laughing gleefully and sails away at top speed.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

    Electrified?

You can bet you'd end up with people coming out of the crowd to see what happens when you put your tongue on it though...

They do have categories. If you bother to watch fo rlong enough the BBC gives you a run down of each category. There's big controversy in one of the wheelchair races at the moment as one of team GB has been put into a higher class, meaning the ppl in this race have a lower level of dissability than her but apparently she's too able for the class she was originally entered into, she doesn't want to race now cos she knows she'll do appalling .

You bastards! I came into this thread believing we'd see a proper debate or chat about the unfairness within Paralympics, but I ended up crying I was laughing so hard!

I think this thread is wrong that you guys have taken it too far. Even though I did find some of the comments quite amusing, it's still hardly kind to those competing, disabled or not-quite-so-disabled.

It did go a little bit too far, but it was fun while it lasted!

Ok, just to clarify... many disbaled people would be THE first to take the pee out of themselves.

ALL the people I have worked with in the past have a crueler sense of humour than most of us about their handicaps than any of us would ever dare to have. I don't believe the thread has gone too far, but has stayed nicely on the side of being funny without being derogatory or demeaning to disabled people.

What every able bodied person has yet to realise is that just cos you've lost an arm or were born without feet doesn't mean you're not as sharp, quick-witted or hilariously evil as the next man... I know a couple of people who would find this thread outstandingly funny, one of them is blind as the proverbial and still gets the hump on when I read to him from the paper and tell him how little today's page 3 girl is wearing...

The whole thing was a gag, as I think (hope) almost all of you noticed. I wasn't really moaning about unfairness at the Paralympics nor about the catagorisation.

I think you need to strike a balance between not going too far and being patronising by assuming you can't have a joke on them the same as you would any able bodied person.

As Deckard said, you don't lose your sense of humour, nor quick-wit when your arm falls off.

Did anyone catch the Radio 4 feature last Friday?
Basically the mentally handicapped have been banned from the Paralympics because of lack of an audit system to verify that competitors qualify (following on from the Spanish Para Basketball team in 2000?)...
The mental health charities are crying discrimination!
    Human rights gone too far...
