Yup, worth freezing my nuts off for. I've got about 20 of these long exposures, but tbh the cold was quite challenging for me and I'm not that found of them.
The long weekend I took was to cheer up a friend of mine who was a bit down in the dumps at the time, however she decided she couldn't be bothered to get her ski gear out of storage (people outside of London, its very common for young people to live in house shares round here, the £500pcm all in, gets you very little in the way of storage, so lots of people rent lockup space too, for about £50pcm) she read something on the internet about it being a little bit colder than London. Hard to believe she is a lawyer eh! So she decided to go in a very stylish duffle coat. A bloody duffle coat. I'll be honest I've made piece with the fact the rest of the world is dumb, but a duffle coat and knitted mittens. The gap between the wool of the mittens was getting on for half a cm in places.
Suffice to say I ended up loosing almost all my base layers, my lovely thermals, and my outer gloves, as even my glove liners were better than the gloves she had brought. Oh she had a scarf thou, not like she was completely un-prepared for it.
We got a bus to the middle of nowhere and proceeded to freeze to death for an hour or two. Luckily I had some deep heat style warm patches things, I bought a whole box of them in the summer one year as a camping shop was selling them for 30p each or something. However, as you might be able to guess by now, my friends clothing was so inappropriate I ended up giving them all to her bar one to stop my fingers dropping off. Thankfully she didn't realise the socks I had on are awesome, and my boots just heavenly, and that my trousers were thermal lined. So it was only the top half of me that was becoming a Tesco value turkey.
It was around an hour in that the phrase death march was mentioned. I politely explained that we had taken a bus, not marched, but alas the gods were not kind to man when they created cold pissed of woman, even less kind when its cold pissed off woman who knows she's in the wrong.
Thankfully I decided to use my tripod to take photos, rather than bludgeon the clothes stealing walt-disney-puppy-eyed girl to death. Yes, I am aware its cold, no need to keep telling me.. It was very odd, because we never argue.
However the sky started to light up and all the problems and risks of frostbite were forgotten! Sadly I was struggling to operate my camera properly, I remember my dad telling me of how extreme cold can change the mind long before hypothermia sets in, how careful I should be langlaufen, as when you stop to rest, you can suddenly start to get very cold. Given that we were just idle sitting about, I think that day I experienced it first hand.

Thanks for all the replies
In regards to the cold, other than the gloves I forgot my gloves back in Japan (though I *should* have some here in Aberdeen) I am reasonably well equipped. In the first place I am abnormally tolerant to low temperature in the first place and in recent years I have also learnt not to mess with mother nature regardless. I will be taking a base layer, fleece, synthetic jacket, down jacket and a waterproof shell.
I can skii, but it won't be the main objective of this trip (I aiming more towards nature photography). If all goes well, I will be back in Japan early September so late August/early September is probably as far away as I can push back my plans. I will go with the expectations that it will still too early for aurora borealis, so if it happens it happens, and if it doesn't then I am sure I will still be able to witness some spectacular views anyway.
Cost wise, I am hoping to keep to around £500 including accommodation/excluding flight, but I have a bit of flexibility. I very rarely drink alcohol and never alone (not sure if I can drag someone along), so that is not something I need to worry too much. On the other hand, I am a bit of a foodie, but shall refrain from splashing out this time around. I am mainly interested in sights.
Since I can not drive I am quite interested in joining a golden circle tour (will read up after this post), it exist and isn't too extortionate.. unless doing it by myself is dead easy (transport wise). And even then, I have found that tours aren't necessarily bad as they I find that I end up doing more than alone (I have a bad habit of staying too long in one place). For a first visit, I'd like to sample different things
Shouldn't have any issues with transport, there are plenty of tour agencies that will take you to the golden circle. Just keep an eye on costs and book before via the internet so you know upfront, it is a very expensive country. You could easily do it on your own, but you could always try trip advisor forums or similar to meet up with some people who are going there too.
The golden circle thing is quite good, we did a very short one as we had such little time, my friend wanted to go diving, as apparently the water is incredibly pure and clear.
We also did a cycle tour thing, that was quite fun, riding in a boiler/romper suit!
If your on your own budgeting for some beer money might not be a bad idea, the locals are friendly and all speak English really well.

You want to give any decent hotel in just about any major capital city a wide berth then. I remember the room that being (significantly) above that, per night, in Tokyo, 20 years ago. Mind you, it was a good hotel. And as for some of the more, erm, up-market country retreats, be they Japan, California or the UK, £200 barely puts a dent in the overnight rate. It might not even cover dinner. And for a top suite at some of the srubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishier hotels in London, Paris, etc, £200 gets you, well, about 40 minutes.
All I can say is thank goodness for corporate expense accounts.
