Arthripods eh? I must say i'm very impressed. I don't know why we have this contempt for ArthrOpods, but I must admit I don't get along with ArthrOpods too well myself, spiders in particular. I was doing some building work once out in an old country house and for the first time ever I came across a 'house spider' 'nest'. Bloody hell it was huge, like a great big huge 5 inch thick funnel behind this wall, bigger than a man's head, and there were so many spiders behind that wall of all varietys, mostly the 'big bastard' kind. It was like that bit in Indiana Jones with all the creepy crawlies. Needless to say it has stuck with me. I think that explains my contempt.

    I hated that job.

    Try living in Tucson.

1 cm is big is it? No it's jolly well not! The local insect wildlife out here is bigger and scarier than Rab C Nesbitt in a thong and body paint.

Tarantulas are just part of the scenery and now and again you might even run into a Black Widow. Apparently the Brown Recluse hangs around but fortunately I've never run into one. Then there's these things called Kissing Bugs which when they bite you leave a lovely balloon looking blister. Had the fright of my life when I woke up one morning with a sore toe and as the day went on as it started to balloon up in three places. Burst the stupid things and then people said if that hole starts to get bigger or deeper get yourself to the ER because it might have been a Brown Recluse - you can imagine the fun day I had after that.

Of course there's the Scorpions who like to inhabit the gardens, which in themselves are just about as lethal as anything else, and as for flying things - I hate flying things that buzz past your head - forget rolled up news paper, there are bugs round here that would rival chinooks! Drop the Daily Mail, and grab a bat, a big, hard bat.

So ya, all sympathy with you on the scary bug thing, it's just moving here I realised that England is only the third division when it comes to bugs!

No ... flies taste through their feet and then throw up on the food to help break it down so they can eat it, and we all know where flies stand and like to play.

I say more spiders the better - just as long as the flies stay away.

I hate spiders too! Nice to see a rational response at last, too many times there's people scared of spiders and when you go to kill them they're like "oh, that's cruel just put it outside"

Eughh, I hate em too. I was playing my gameboy once in the shed and one decided to abseil in front of my face while playing. Those big thick hairy ones. Plus the shed was locked from the inside (only mechanism to keep the door shut) from the door to where I was sitting was about 2 feet so not much distance to get away

Now I've gotten more used to them as I've got loads that appear in the bathroom. They're the invisible ones that are transparent like but daddy long legs sized. You only see them when they're really close to you.

(Yes I know this thread has been revived from 2004..)

in any situation involving big hairy spiders, distance to get away is crucial.

Now I've gotten more used to them as I've got loads that appear in the bathroom. They're the invisible ones that are transparent like but daddy long legs sized. You only see them when they're really close to you.
I once knew the name for those but have forgot it; we just call 'em thread spiders (on account of thin threadly legs, rather than them coming on forums & starting threads... ) There do seem to be more of them these days.. but they don't have the OMFG effect of a chunky shed/house spider, & don't have that 'GETITOFFME!!!' factor. My cat was chasing a whopper couple of nights ago.. became a bit hysterical & fell halfwaydown the stairs in the attempt. Eventually cornered the 'thing' & chucked it outside, minus a leg, but it got off lightly imo.

I'd rather have spiders in my house than any of the stuff that they prey on. Plus they provide much entertainment for my kitties.

And yes - a new member signed up and searched for a thread about spiders - does anyone ask themselves why?

why what? I couldn't care less if he bumps the thread, I dunno why others do. Maybe next time he should create a new thread with his comments and a reference to each old thread which he wishes to reply to, which will be responded to with batman posts should he bump them.

i'm not wondering about thread revivals - they allow me to read about the early days of what hexites were up to.. i'm more worried about what moogle was doing locking himself in the shed!

my ducks used to eat spiders they found in the garden, but they ate all of them so resorted to skinning live frogs..

and as for house spiders.. I use the glass on a bit of card trick, then put them in my sisters room.. she doesn't mind though, she feeds them to her fly-trap plants for a bit of variety in their diet..

it was those old style slide locks like for gates and such. It was the only way to keep the door closed as it was cold and rainy that day. Only place I could play the gameboy without being told off
Good god man I had a gameboy! I wasn't old enough to be doing what you think I was doing

We used to get loads in our old house, really big, giant ones. Ever since we've moved they've been pretty rare though, I think I've seen 2 in as many years.

They still creep me out though, I'm a big wuss.

This is the chappy.. pholcus phalangioides or the daddy-long-legs spider (figures), or 'cellar spider'. Apparently eats other spiders... so they can't be all bad.
