The Fruits of my trip to the tip

A few weeks ago I went to my local tip to dump some monitors, I picked up an old bike and a 17" tft that someone had dumped, I chased up 'proview' who made the screen and found out it was under warranty : D after a bit of haggling on the price they agreed to come and get my TFT fix it and deliver it back (next day) for £46 ......... they also gave it back to me fully boxed with all the leads and drivers and manuals, which I did not have... I’m well chuffed

Yes it’s running fine at 1280 x 1024, no drag on games, it’s really nice having so much work space, my best find so far.

As for the bike…. Oh yes people love it, my expensive mountain bike has not been out the garage since I got that bad boy…. It has sooooooo much class

YEAH it was broke.... i rma'ed it and they fixed it brand new chip and back panel.... so they said it even has 1 more year left on the warranty

i paid £5 for it, as far as i know it's theft to take something as the 'tip owners' pay to be the sole 'dump' in a town.

Skipraiding isn't illegal AFAIK. If someone was using a skip to store stuff that they actually wanted to keep, then you might get in trouble if you took it, but how likely is that? Even if it happened, I doubt you'd get in trouble if you just apologised and gave the stuff back. Skips outside offices/ buildings being refurbished are a great source of cable of all varieties especially cat5e and heavy duty mains stuff, and I've had old computers, modems, dictating machines etc. too. It's apparently possible to make some money recycling aluminium ducting/panneling and old copper pipes too. You're basically doing the person who's using the skip a favour; they have to pay by the skipload for their waste to be disposed of, so if you create more space in the skip for them they could easily end up saving money.

I got a 29" Sony telly out of a skip outside someone's house once, albeit that it needs some minor repairs I haven't got round to yet. I never walk past a skip without having a quick look.

OTOH taking stuff from dumps/tips is usually against the rules; for a start the dump owners claim possesion of the stuff when it's dumped, and for a second they don't want people walking about digging through the rubbish as it's potentially dangerous. A lot of tips operate a system where they'll either sell you stuff cheap (like Jimmy's one), or have an area set aside for stuff that people might want to re-use.

Skip rubbish actually belongs to the company who own the skip. Taking it without their permission is theft! Get caught doing it and you get a severe slapping. I know since my employer actually has to physically break stuff before putting it in the skips and has CCTV on them to stop people nicking from them!

Um....really? People actually get taken to court for taking stuff from skips? Are you sure? I'll continue to risk it I think.

What do you mean 'the company who own the skip', anyway? The skip company or the company that have hired it?

What sort of stuff? And why do they bother? If people want the stuff why not give it away or sell it?
