Coooo a tesla coil. These are great fun none of the pain of a van der graaf but all of the discharging fun

I built one of these years ago for a science exhibition you could draw huge discharges from it and hardly feel a thing.

My borther did this a while ago, the surface of teh cd kinda goes all flakey, bit weird really but looks pretty cool none the less

Microwaves ARE radiation, just non-ionising electro-magnetic radiation. Whether you get "a bit hot" or whether you'd suffer burns would depend on the power levels, duration of exposure and exact frequency. RF burns, whether microwave or lower frequency RF, are not nice at all, and the lower frequency stuff tends to penetrate deeper into flesh, whereas microwaves tend to burn closer to the surface. This, as an aside, is why there are 'concerns' over mobile phones - because most phone bands are either in, or very close to, the microwave bands.

Before anyone gets unduly worried, though, consider that we are surrounded by RF (radio frequency) signals all the time. Any time you get an electrical signal flowing in a conductor, there'll be an element of RF radiation. Consider the TV antenna picking up a signal, and that signal being conducted down the aerial cable to your TV set or radi. RF radiation, albeit in VERY small amounts. There's an RF field every time you plug your toaster or kettle, or electric razor, or computer, into the mains and turn it on.

You won't get any detrimental effects from these RF fields, however. But, believe me, you do not want to be holding, for very long, the business end of the antenna on my HF radio if I transmit at full power.

er...not a good idea to microwave CD's....especially is you breath in the fumes....cyanide gas aint exactly nice. and no, i aint joking about it. dont be silly people, only do it outside if you are gonna be doin it.
