What would happen if you stuck a CD in the microwave and let it cook for a few mins?

Dunno test it and let us know how you get on? Don't forget the pics
definately arcing of lightning from the cd to the walls
it's very dangerous and i wouldn't reccomend it...
CDs have an alu surface that would combust when the microwave is turned on....
Whatever you've seen on Clarkson's TV show, don't even bother trying... if the microwave blew up you'd get buggared by a lot of radiation...

In a moment of madness I gave this a go some time ago. As I recall there were a lot of sparks, arcing within the CD and the writing surface of CD was wrecked (no surprise there). The CD remained intact and didn't melt possibly due to me microwaving it for 5-10 secs only.Originally posted by Flanderz

awwww :/
this is like being told not to play with matches because they are dangerous..
Myself and everyone else at work are lucky we have no microwave
i dont think itd blow up, just 'lightning' will fly frm the cd to the walls of the microwave blowing craters in the wall, after that, no idea what happens though
I don't recall any cd to wall 'lightning' just internal to the cd stuff.
I think you get little electric pops, the cd plastic would probably start to melt, and it would stink.
Microwaves only give out microwaves - so even if it blew up your not in danger from radiation (you'd just get a bit hot, and anything metallic on you would heat up if exposed).
There have been trials experimenting with microwave House Heating. Unfortunately its not doable because anything metallic gets very hot.
http://www.electricstuff.co.uk/cdzap.html has some piccies of what happens to a microwaved CD when you put it on a tesla coil (not something to try at home methinks)
That was pretty cool!
