    CD in Microwave

What would happen if you stuck a CD in the microwave and let it cook for a few mins?

it's very dangerous and i wouldn't reccomend it...

CDs have an alu surface that would combust when the microwave is turned on....

Whatever you've seen on Clarkson's TV show, don't even bother trying... if the microwave blew up you'd get buggared by a lot of radiation...

So the CD would get hot?

A plate on it's own doesn't get hot - it's conducted heat from the plate that makes it hot when you take it out.

iirc that is because a ceramic plate has no water molecules for the microwaves to add energy to.

Does the plastic in a cd get hot?

In a moment of madness I gave this a go some time ago. As I recall there were a lot of sparks, arcing within the CD and the writing surface of CD was wrecked (no surprise there). The CD remained intact and didn't melt possibly due to me microwaving it for 5-10 secs only.

I think you get little electric pops, the cd plastic would probably start to melt, and it would stink.

Microwaves only give out microwaves - so even if it blew up your not in danger from radiation (you'd just get a bit hot, and anything metallic on you would heat up if exposed).

There have been trials experimenting with microwave House Heating. Unfortunately its not doable because anything metallic gets very hot.
