Re: Body Image and the Media

Aside from the rights and wrongs, does anyone else find it ironic that a campaign criticising a company has led to everyone talking about said company and, apparently, increased sales. Before this, I had literally never heard of them - and I use protein.

Fairly standard storm in a tea cup reaction? A small handful of people shout really loudly about not very much, lots of people peek over and by odds some of them will be interested in the advert displayed. It's ironic outcome and one that seems to balance the situation out I think.

Wonder what she might make of this?

No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.

Re: Body Image and the Media

As far as PR is concerned, I think that the tweeter exchange could have been handled better. That said, I don't know how people can complain about unhealthy body image when the body is athletic slim and not anorexic slim. What do people expect from a model? They are paid because they are attractive across their entire features. Though they have to work for it, they also had favourable genes. Knowing that, it is obvious that few of us will ever look like the model of a cover fashion / fitness magazine and I think we owe it to ourselves not to get too obsessed over it. If your body is in the healthy range, then don't obsess that you don't look like those models unless you want to make it a personal goal. And if it isn't, then you can choose to care or not care about your body image, but it is not societies duty to make you feel better about yourself (not that I find bullying acceptable). We should ideally all strive to be fit whether it is on the heavier or lighter side of fit.

Regarding the product name having 'weight loss' in it.. well, for a start I'd take such claims with a pinch of salt anyway, and weight loss aimed at people who are already in the healthy range and people who are obese/overweight needs to be advertised differently. I have a body fat percentage of around 12%, so any attempt to impress would require a model with <8% body fat. But for men in excess of 30% body fat, they may find a model with about 15-18% to be a more realistic goal to aim for.
