Buy low - sell high.
Buy low - sell high.
Actually learning that this was bad advice was quite a turning point for me. Buying low and selling high is great in theory, but if selling low (even lower) means that you can invest in something that's doing better then that's the best use of your money, though it's naturally incredibly tempting to hold on to sell high instead.

I'm going to cheat and post three, because I AM THE LAW (yes I just watched Judge Dredd) no, not really. I'm going to because for me they feed into each other and sort of live in the same world....
"The second you aren't paying attention to the tool you're using, it will take your fingers from you. It does not know sympathy."
This was a piece of advice given to me about using table saws... Evil wicked things that they can be. However it's applicable to a lot of things, even some hand tools and fairly humdrum household stuff. Google "angle grinder injury" for instance, you won't use one without a guard fitted and both hands holding onto it ever again.
"If you don't gaffer it, it will gaffer you"
Black Country wisdom from the depths of Pensnett... Basically, take charge of what's in front of you and don't be scared of it, or it will become the boss of you, not the other way around.
aaand finally, three simple words...
"Belt and braces" - Double check everything, come up with two solutions to the problem instead of just one - Always have a fallback position even when you shouldn't need one.
those three together ARE GOLDEN rules

possibly not the best rule for magical industry ;-) though for other more mundane occupations, its served me pretty well. As long as you set expectations accordingly, then people can be quite forgiving. Its when they get "surprised" they are less happy about it.
