Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

.... heading an "all new" line-up.

I.e. no Hammond or May, either.

Oh well, TG was great while it lasted. But for me, Chris Evans hosting it makes it a Frankenstein Top Gear ... a reanimated corpse of a show, with no soul. I struggle to think of, for me, a worse choice, unless it was Russell Brand or Jonathon Ross.

RIP, Top Gear. It was great knowing you.

I can't fault them for sacking Clarkson as what he did should never be tolerated.

Despite that however, it's just not Top Gear unless it is Clarkson, Hammond and May. I think many others would think the same way, so I wouldn't be surprised if the ratings won't be very good and lead to a cancellation of the show entirely.

Need a bucket and mop, Santa?

And that's a sentence I never expected to use.

As for giving Chris Evans a chance, I'm sure he'll get one. Some people may prefer TG with him, but I suspect most of them won't be current TG fans. I can't stand him, or at least, his media persona. Top Gear is now dead to me. Shame, but there it is.

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

It's a good choice. I'm not particularly a fan of his, but he is a genuine car enthusiast & a slightly unconventional presenter who just so happens to have a bit of a midas touch when it comes to broadcasting. A lot of people will be turned off by him, but so as it was with Clarkson. As Evans said so himself (when saying he didn't want the job) a 50/50 love/hate split usually means a big hit.

If the BBC gets anywhere near the viewing figures Top Gear has previously enjoyed, they'll be happy, and they won't be particularly bothered whether that figure is made up of previous fans, or new viewers, so long as someone is watching.

I agree. It's going to be a different show - more of a proper car show and less dicking around, which I will admittedly miss. I'm still hoping for a Clarkson, Hammond and May show on Netflix or similar.

Top gear has been dead to me for some time. I think it was the episode where they had the flying balloon/caravan that "accidentally got too close to an airport". It was just so contrived, in a series of stuff that was feeling silly without the benefit of actually entertaining me. It was some time after then that I realised I had a bunch of episodes on the TiVo and no interest in watching them, so deleted the season pass and pretty much forgot the show existed. A quick google places that at 5 years ago, lol, I haven't missed it despite having watched pretty much every single episode up until that point.

So for me he might bring the show back to life, if he doesn't then meh, no loss.

Its an interesting choice, I will give them that. Clarkson et all had chemistry, it was more like watching 3 friends dicking around, with the usual ‘Poweeerrrr’ comments. Chris is a self confessed car nut, will be interesting to see who he is partnered with (and if indeed its another 2 presenters or they have more / less). But yes - the 'old' Top Gear has now firmly gone

Ok, forget Clarkson; you can't go around punching people.

Two things I'd like on the new show: Amber Heard and American cars.

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

Wonder how much they are paying him? TBH far better petrol heads out there that could also fit the bill. Jamiroquai for one. International star, might do it because of the cars not really for any money.

I'm not going to hold my breath, but will catch the new show when its on.

Also the last TG featuring Clarkson and co will be on the 28th June.

Well, I have to admit, I was on that path too, though not quite so advanced. It had become a bit formulaic, and as you say, "contrived" in places. I still have the last two episodes that were transmitted on a DVR, and I haven't yet got around to watching them. I will, though.

For me, TG was about a trio of middle-aged distinctly uncool (*) TV guys "dicking around", and the occasional half-serious trial of some high power or extreme exotica vehicles. It wasn't actually a car show, as such. Just a sort-of car-themed magazine and, yes, it was getting a bit tired.

Some people have called for a 'serious' car show, covering "normal" cars. Well, fair enough, but if it's a sort-of televised 'Which' on cars, then it might be useful for someone currently buying a car, but it'd be pretty poor entertainment, and I certainly wouldn't expect it to appeal to traditional TG fans.

(*) There's a type of person, usually with a type of appearance, that seems to be preferred by TV companies. That includes the 'not a hair out of place' BBC news presenter type, and the extrovert, 'look at me, aren't I special' type, but what it tends not to include is 'worn around the edges, slightly portly, middle-aged guys (or women) with cheap haircuts'.

And yes, I know that the TG team milked that for all it was worth, and it was in itself perhaps a tad contrived, but the nature of the show, in playing along with it, led to a different atmosphere and a different show.

The new CE TG has a choice. Either it tries to emulate the old trio, in which case I expect it to be a 3rd rate pastiche and that doesn't appeal to me one bit. Or CE tries to reshape the show. If he does that, it might be a commercial success, but it won't be the TG I used to enjoy, and it'll be presented by one of the guys you'd have to pay me a LOT to get me to sit and watch. The only thing CE has that appeals to me is that he isn't Ross or Brand.

And either way, it's of no appeal to me, not even to the extent of giving it a chance. CE is enough to guarantee that, all on his own. Everything else becomes immaterial for me.

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

I'll give him the chance to interest me in the 'new' show. One episode, maybe two if I'm undecided. I think we're all fairly sure that this isn't going to be Top Gear. It'll be a car show of some kind. With some pranks or stupidity thrown in there no doubt. But I will be treating this like a completely brand new show, as is only fair to all involved. I may compare and contrast later on but I am not setting my expectations that way.

At least we have June 28th to look forward to !

I'm going to give him a chance. I was getting a bit fed up with the way Top Gear was going, it didn't seem to be about cars any more. Hopefully this will take the focus back to the motors.
