Things can be legal for medical purposes, but illegal for general use.
    Steroids for example.

Its still illegal ! And for that reason people know its bad.

Its actually one of the most harmless drugs out there
But if people are given the message "it's illegal but you can't be arrested for it" surely that will give out the message it's ok, or that it's more acceptable than before.

I know excessive alcohol use can be bad and I won't be repeating the other night again. I'm against it because I've seen first hand the trouble it can do, it ruined my life and had ruined those of my friends (including giving one schitsophrenia). I don't have much to say on the subject that I haven't said before but I've allready made about 20 posts on the subject in this question time thread if you're interested:

i spent Wednesday night in a cannabis cafe near where i live, and it was such a liberating experience. no more sneaking about n hiding in the park, or in mates cars over the common to have a smoke, just go in and sit down and have a few joints with other friendly people, away from dodgy street dealers and the police.
this country will never be the same as Amsterdam, because the Dutch people are really tolerant of others and their problems or life choices. i mean, what other country in the world gives out free heroin (not methadone..) to addicts to stop them from turning to crime to feed their addiction?!
i spent a week there this summer, and i am now planning on living there, it amazed me that much. peace.

if war is the answer, then we are asking the wrong question

Our government really need to get their priorities sorted out

People can sit in a pub or anywhere else for that matter puffing away on fags that WILL (and its a fact) inevitably give them/others lung cancer but Its illegal for me to sit at home and have a chug on my wee bong which despite what ANYONE says has no proven detrimental effect on me whatsoever

Have you EVER heard of anyone getting really stoned on a friday night then going out and looking for some random person to kick the rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish out of? ......... NO, IT SIMPLY DOES NOT HAPPEN!

    Go figure

If you honestly think it has no long term negative side effects you're either stupid or kidding yourself. It damages your lungs, your brain, your moods, makes you less sharp, can cause depression, schitsophrenia....the list is endless.

ok but if setting laws for the whole country those issues are bound to affect a large number of people. Also if you have been a regular user for some time you WILL experience most of the things in that list.

The alcohol debate is also rubbish imo, alcohol is only more harmful in the short term but due to the nature of the drug most people don't use it nearly as often as the average cannabis user smokes. It's long term side effects are nothing in comparison to cannabis and just because 1 drug is damaging society it's not a reason to legalise another to do more damage.

alchohol not harmful in the long term?

heart disease, liver failure, kidney failure. These things aren't harmful?

And i disagree, most people i know that drink go down the pub and drink more frequently than the people i know that use cannabis.

Legalising it would give police more manpower to do more important work than catch kids who like a spliff behind the bike sheds at dinner time. the drug is already widely availdable illegally, so any damage its doing its doing now.

I won't argue with the fact that social issues around drugs are a separate issue but the long term side effects of cannabis are worse than alcohol? Liver disease? Heart disease? Cancer? Pancreatitis? Stomach ulcers? And anyone addicted to anything will be liable to suffer mood swings / depression / problems with concentration. I would imagine that most addicts tend to either start out with emotional and or mental problems or end up with them regardless of what they're addicted to.

IMO these aren't as harmful as crippling your brain and most people who use alcohol do not suffer from those things you mentioned. Also I think the people you know must be an exception, most weed users I know do it nearly every day, some can't sleep without any, nearly all have smokers coughs, are definitly less sharp then when they started and have tried on numerous occasions to quit. Most people I know who drink only do it about once a week and I haven't seen or experienced any long term damage from drink (except maybe a bit of weight gain). Anyway as I said before most of what I had to say on the subject was said on the question time thread.

Mate - read through what you've said - you think 'brain damage' is worse than liver failure (i.e. potentially being dead cuz no-one will give you a transplant for being an alcoholic?)

And it's sounds like you're comparing people who drink once or twice a week with people who smoke every day - not really fair is it? (Sorry for the stereotype) but in terms of mental and social skills can the wine-o on the local park bench be compared to your mates who only go drinking a couple of times a week?

Everyone's met a few people who have / are def. smoking too much for their own good just as everyone's met a few people who have / are drinking too much for their own good - a recreational user and someone who's either got an addiction or is bordering on it aren't the same thing - substance abuse and addiction will always be around and are a separate thing to the drug itself being better or worse on a scale. Alcohol is bad for you and it's legal and yet most people are not alcoholics. If weed was legal everyone would not turn into a pot-head!
