Are you a serial tab opener?

On a par with my other bad habits (endless bookmarks list, uncleared history, messy desktop) I often have a lot of tabs open at a time.. but last night I counted 36 and though I may have had reasons.. even I don't think there's any excuse for that number.

What are your tab habits - strictly limit yourself to a handful, or open new ones with devil-may-care abandon?

tend to open new tabs until my grotty bloat-ware ridden HP strarts grinding to a halt, then kill the vast majority!

I try to keep myself down to around 10 - 15 open tabs, and the majority of the time I'll have less than that, but obviously it depends on what I'm doing; if I'm researching a complex topic or looking for a specific piece of information I'll generally read an article, opening every relevant looking link in a new tab, then move on to the first new tab and do the same thing with that page, until I find what I'm after. That can lead to some pretty ridiculous tab sets

Yes this is the sort of thing, the branching off from a topic, can spawn tabs in no time. Also wanting to refer to a page at a particular point in time rather than reload a changed/updated version from bookmarks.

Ever since I've had a half decent PC I don't use bookmarks for short term reminders and since my computer can regularly stay on for weeks at a time, I'm not surprised to end up with multiple windows with 10+ tabs each. Chrome sure loves to have a reason to gobble up my 8GB of RAM!

Inefficient - you need to prune research trees as you go. If a quick skim of the new tab isn't fruitful, off it goes...if it is in fact the source of the first one, and has more info/background, bye bye to the spun (or spin-off, if it's done well, I guess) article ('cause that's what they usually are, and I should know, I write the things!). Even down to formal research papers - you can usually get down to a core by branch and prune relatively quickly, and those papers you retain will have their references, so likely to allow you to track most other relevant data easily. Modern papers that are done in LaTeX are best, of course - embedded links and data! But the pruning *as you go* is key to not timewasting...

Re: Are you a serial tab opener?

Guilty as charged. I used to run with 50+ tabs on regular basis and even after pruning I am still at 28-ish tabs on Chrome. Lately I have gone back to IE to force me to stop that (since it doesn't save the tabs, I *have* to close th tabs whenever I restart). Also, it kinda runs like a dog anyway so I try to keep the number of tabs at a minimum (I try to keep it at 3-5).

I keep it to a healthy 10 tabs, and often do housekeeping as I'm going!

Yes, they just seem to spawn! There is a limit on Safari on the iPad, so that's a reason to review them all, I often find I have 4 or 5 HEXUS pages open at the same time! (So I can keep an eye on dodgy posters!

Go to forum, open new posts, open each interesting topic in new tab, work through them.
I don't usually have that many.

Re: Are you a serial tab opener?

I used to when I was using Opera, but then they started from scratch and nothing I've come across since has the user interface or stability to handle more than a dozen or so tabs. Chrome is insanely memory hungry (& VP9 etc.), firefox's extensions mostly don't work, Vivaldi and Avant are promising but were crashy last time I tried them with lots of tabs, edge and most other browsers don't even try.

Tab stacks seem to be another excellent feature lost to the drive to make ever more simplified and difficult to use web browsers.

Re: Are you a serial tab opener?

Depends on the website and the connection speed. For example, if I am on a slow connection or the website is just slow, I will open up each new topic of the forums in a new tab to load whilst reading another, but on a good connection I just go back and forth. If I am "window" shopping, then various items will get opened in a new tab to compare. I don't think I have really gone above 10-12 though.
