Found out that the CCNA course is not held here but in Cirencester
I may apply for another course instead.

If you do a boot camp for the CCNA it will set back somewhere in the region of £1000. But you will get hands on experience and a mentored approach. Cisco qualifications must be recertified every 3 years. 2 years for CCIE. Which is another reason why Cisco engineers get paid more than Microsoft ones generally speaking.
Now, the cheapest way to do your CCNA is to go on to ebay and buy a couple of 2500 routers and a 1900 switch, buy a course book. Todd Lammle's book from Sybex is excellent. You can get exam questions from Boson.... http://www.boson.com
You can of course forego the routers and switch and get a software simulator but I would recommend taking on the extra cost and selling them on later. You will then get real hands on with the equipment. You can actually do password recoveries and IOS upgrades, for example, which will allow you to talk with authority at interview.
Cisco courses are not easy and you will often have to go the extra mile to get the courses and results. You will have to invest in yourself. But believe me when I say that the rewards justify the means.
Where's Bury St Edmunds in relation to Bishops Stortford?

The idea of buying some old equipment and a book is a good one as it will cost me less for sure.
Bury St edmunds to Bishops Stortford is only about an hours drive mate.

I'm trying to get into IT as well at the moment. I left Uni in December as i didn't like it, so am now searching for jobs to try and gain entry into the IT industry. I actually went for a test for an IT helpdesk job today actually, which i passed, so i now have the interview left to do. Hopefully after doing the helpdesk job i might be able to become a technician or a network engineer, as i have the CCNA from when i did it at sixth form.

Ok, if you decide to go the bootcamp route I know of a very good training establishment in Bishops Stortford. It's run by a guy who has been a CCIE for about 10 years now and I have worked with him on a number of occaisions and continue to do so, he is assisting me with my CCIE studies. His name is Terry Jack the website is http://www.globalnettraining.co.uk I would not hesitate to recommend these people.
Mike, is your CCNA current? I know it's changed quite a bit since I did it. I think it's got harder. If you want to look at contracts or permie jobs probably the best website is jobserve.com. My last 6 contract positions have come via there.

Thanks, i hadn't heard of the jobserve.com website, i'd been using other ones such as Monster, Totaljobs etc, so i'll take a look.
My CCNA is current as i got it in June 2004 just as i finished sixth form.

a long time ago MCSE's and the like counted for an awful lot.
they where tough to get without study AND practical expereience.
Companies brought out courses and books that taught you how to pass the exams - not know the technology, as a result recruiting companies as a rule of thumb now class things like this worthless without a lot of relavent experience to back this up.
I know a lot of the companies I've worked for have some pretty senior windows guys witout mcp's mcse's etc etc and a lot of new recuites don't get looked at because they have MCSE's but no expereince which means as a rule of thumb they have done one of the cheat books.
when ever I do interviews I always look at people with CV's that have experience that flows and progresses. I then grill them on what they have done to see if they can back up what they have advertised
Get a low paying job to get experience and study some worth while tasks too
It is Inevitable.....
Which is why Cisco has kept the lead in the certification stakes as it is hard to pass the exams without some hands on experience. The higher up the ladder you go the more experience you need to get through the testing process.
Admittedly there are some who can get throughjust by learning the content. I had the misfortune of working alongside one. This guy had actually managed to pass his CCNP, well it was on his CV but I don't think it was checked because he went white when I showed our line manager my CCO login with all my examination history on the Cisco website. He claimed his had lapsed....hmmmmm. It took me very little time to realise what I was dealing with. The man was totally useless. Shortly after I figured it out our boss figured it out. Not long after that a vacancy appeared in the team. The contract world can be tough.
Make sure you can back up what you say.

There is a college in Bury mate, you could inquire there.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
Well Cablenet training is located in Bury too and they are the company offering all these courses. I may try out one of their intro to networking courses to see how I get on with it.
I think that I really need to have some qualifications even if I do not have the experience due to me emmigrating later in the year. I can sell cars and stuff but I am not really that excited by the world of sales and targets. I would much rather start my new life in Canada with a new career as well.

Ok I rang the company in Bury where I live and they recomended doing these 3 courses, I personally think that the 1st course will not really teach me much but the other 2 definately will. The courses are £995,£1250 and £1595 + vat.
Here are the 3 courses that were suggested to me.

If you're going to spend that much give Globalnet a call.

I think that I will go the self learn route as I have at least 8 months until I emmigrate.
I will look into purchasing the items on ebay and getting myself a good book.
