Happy days man! I remember speaking to you about 7 or 8 years ago about your situation at the time, it's certainly gone in the right direction.

Thanks. The lucky, or not so lucky thing for me is the 1st / 2nd line has been outsourced so another company is now, or will be in full control so I'm relatively protected on that front. I do know that one guy who has been there 3 - 4 years more than me is pretty annoyed as he didn't get the role, but he didn't apply himself so his own fault.
Thanks
Hahah this was the first thing I said ..now instead of shutting someones PC down, I can shut a server down
Yeah I will be doing, I'll give it 6 - 12 months and then see where I am at, but I have already been told that the role "will" come with a pay rise...I just don't know how much.
Thanks
Cheers.
Yeah at my last place, I went from Service Desk, to NOC then was promised a Desktop Engineer role that never materialised...been a long time coming but I'm happy and hopefully will be in 6 - 12 months ha!

Congrats DG! Good luck in your new position.

Congrats! On premise infrastructure is starting to die the death now as it's all moved into Amazon / Azure / Google.
Try and be the guy they train up!

I'm doing my Amazon certs (just passed the CSA) and would recommend the CloudGuru courses over LinuxAcademy (I'm registered with both). A lot of my customers are asking about certifications, and the whilst the cost of signing up with the web based training isn't too bad, the cost of sitting the exams starts to add up.

Congratz!
So I know it's a bit of a thread necro, but thought I'd provide an update.
Still with the same company, still in Infrastructure but had a bit of a side step. I'm now Infrastructure - Project Support. Basically any new products coming in and being implemented I get involved in.
Biggest I've done so far is moving from Microsoft DNS / DHCP stuff to BlueCat, was a decent project to get my teeth into.
The first year or so after moving over was... hell. The Service Desk ended up being outsourced not long after I moved over, the outsource staff were a bunch of apprentices that had to look after multiple customers with little to no training and expected to just know things company specific. This meant for my first year or so I was still being contacted directly by users as they had no faith in the Service Desk, cleaning up mistakes by the service desk staff and then carrying out my Infrastructure responsibilities. At the time we were massively underfunded so a lot of work was firefighting and holding things together with string and tape.
Eventually the company went through a rebrand, we got budget so have been able to get new shiny things, which introduced a completely different issue.... loads of projects but not enough staff or time to do them. Been a fun ride so far.
As for pay, I've been quite lucky that I've received pay rises year on year. Though I do have to admit that these days, I often find myself thinking of moving into contracting.

Nice update for a necro thread, I'm sure we've done longer ones
Good that you're still finding your place in the company, the contracting thing might be a sign you're getting itchy feet again though, what about where you work makes you want to move on?
Disturbedguy (18-06-2024)
A necro maybe, but an interesting one. Good to hear from you, DG.
As for contracting, an interesting option and can certainly go well, but involves some risk too. All I can suggest, and I'm 100% sure you don't need me to tell you, think it through carefully. But if the right opportunity comes up, well, sometimes luck doesn't entirely make itself and needs a bit of a kick in the chuff from us to get it moving.
A lesson learned from PeterB about dignity in adversity, so Peter, In Memorium, "Onwards and Upwards".

To be honest, it's not so much the place that makes me want to move on, I genuinely enjoy working where I am, I get exposed to so much that I'm constantly able to learn something new. If I'm honest I have a probably somewhat unrealistic view of working contracts for x amount of months in a year then taking a few months off. I imagine it would be possible as I've seen some of the contracts out there, but at the moment finding a house is high on my list, though proving tough and contract work probably doesn't look the best to lenders.
It's good to see some of the old faces still kicking around.
Oh I'm 100% not the type of person to just jump into something new, I sit and dwell / think about whatever it is for hours, sometimes days, convince myself I don't need to do whatever it is, regret it then do it anyway .
If I were to do it, it would be after I've bought a house and built up a decent cushion of savings.
