    Realy good burgers

Really good burgers.. dont have to be money.. but they need cooking by a person who knows his/her hot plate

MLyons and I just went to a local bacon wagon, where the guys know us and we have some good bants, and where we've all been looked after well for a good while now.

My normal "Friday Filth" is a bacon and mushroom baguette.. flat side down toasted just before the contents go in..

but MLyons convinced me today that the burger was worth a crack and beside... he had his wallet out.

So.. double 1/4 lb'er burger,s double cheese (American slices orange rubbery gear) melted over (no klosch, didn't need one) , double bacon and a bed of iceberg in the bottom for me. Quick snort of American mustard in there and ...

    BANG!!

What a burger. He was soooooooooooooooooo right. Those buns were upside down on the hotplate for a minute pre serve, absorbing some of the magic from the bacon cooking and WHAT A BURGER!!!

    cant pretend its healthy.
    cant pretend it's posh nosh.
nothing to hide behind either....a crap burger is obvious from the first bite.. an average one from the second... this one was holiday all the way through to the lip-wipe

BANG.. awesome lunch time gob full

I LOVE a good burger.. and it puts the stupidly bland Nando's we all had last week to shame

Oh god that just makes my mouth water, here in our local town we have a burger joint called Rio's thats been going for at least 20 years. It used to serve the type of burger you're talking about, but following multiple changes of ownership, they're now just trading on their reputation and the quality and taste has melted away over time. Such a shame, used to be all homemade organic burgers, now you can clearly tell that they are using pre-made processed rubbish.

    Re: Realy good burgers

Well, a good burger really only requires two elements - quality ingredients propetly used, and good cooking technique.

Also, done right, they aren't particularly unhealthy.

Personally, I'm not that bothered about American mustard, though it wouldn't be my choice. I'd prefer a ZERY light application of British, or even Dijon, but either way, extremely light spread or it ruins it for me. Mustard must be a seasoning, for me, not a major flavour.

American cheese, on the other hand .....

Also, not posh nosh? Y'know, I've had a burger or two in some very fancy restaurants, and by "fancy" I mean very, VERY good, and certainly not cheap, but not the pretentious type.

While the local food truck might not be Michelin-starred, there's no reason why it can't be superb given quality ingredients and a cook that knows what he/she is doing.

By a strange coincidence, my local pub/restaurant does a pretty good burger (and other things) and the better half and me are due to be there is a few hours. I wasn't planning on a burger, but this thread may have just changed my menu choice.

I've not been there for a good 10 years! Sad to hear the demise.

Try burgers & sausages by http://www.beyondmeat.com/ when they're available "by the end of the year" at (so far) just Tesco.

They're supposed to be very nice.

I'm very much a carnivore but am trying to eat less meat due to the CO2e (methane) and land use implications

I found the best burger is always the one you have to hand after getting somewhat sloshed.

That's an interesting concept -a tieable burger. Definitely useful in case the patty slips out.

    Re: Realy good burgers

Well, Zak, my dinner included an 8oz handmade Angus burger (meat comes from a farm about 5 miles from me), with a Portobello mushroom with melted Brie, rasher of dry-smoked back bacon, red onion relish (and, of course, lettuce and beefsteak tomato) on a toasted Brioche bun, with chips, a REALLY nice salad, and a spicy tomato salsa.

Damn.I wouldn't have believed anything would make me feel hungry tonight, and you had to mention that.

    Hmmm.

Well, it's a bit like asking me if I prefer driving a Ferrari or an Aston Martin. They're both really nice, but very different, and which I prefer depends on how I feel on the day.

Rather like burgers, "fish fingers" vary from really, really nice to truly disgusting. I hope you had the former.
