Yes, if it is an Amazon marketplace seller, but I think the OP was talking about an item sold by Amazon directly.
But third party sellers get the benefit of Amazon's marketing and exposure to a larger market, as well as Amazon's payment fulfilment service. The buyer gets the peace of mind of a safer purchase in the event that something does go wrong. And as others have said, the returns process is very streamlined.
Some third party sellers also sell direct and those prices might be slightly lower - so it comes down to consumer choice. Do you pay slightly more for the benefit of a less hassle if things go wrong or pay less but lose the protection of buying through Amazon?
It is worth noting that there are three types of purchase:
Those items sold by Amazon themselves
Those sold by a third party but fulfilled by Amazon (they do billing and despatch - which often includes Prime delivery)
Those sold by the third party where Amazon does the payment service but the seller is responsible for all other aspects of the sale, including despatch.
Its worth reading the T&C for each type of service, but in all cases, there is the backing from Amazon if things don't go well.
