Tech guys - What is yor electricity bill!!

As i imagine most of us here have lots of electrical tech like computers, game consoles, nice tv's etc etc, what is your average electricity bill each month and who is your provider?

My average bill is around £60-£70 a month and my missus thinks thats way too much and watching my use now on the tech i use and buy

For your information i have the following:

    • 42 inch 1080p TV(missus wont let me get a bigger one!)
    • ps4console
    • denon 5.1 surround sound system with sub woofer and AV unit
    • HTPC with a 980gtx inside and 4 core i7 cpu
    • Desktop PC with 6 core i7, 64gb ram, around 5 ssd's inside it and a 2080ti card
    • one 32inch 4k wide gamut hdr monitor from asus
    • one 30inch dell wide gamut monitor
    • Old midi hIfi system with 2 speakers for my pc
    • a desktop tower server with about 8-9 WD Red NAS drives inside it(i use to have this on 124/7 but not anymore)
    • raspberry pi 4 connected to two external 2.5 hdd's for my always on file server
    • another Raspberry pi 3 running pi-hole all the time

Is this overkill? Am i paying way too much for electricity?

I only live in a 2 bedroom flat

It'd be useful to know your monthly usage in MWh as well as cost, that way we could distinguish between using a lot of electric and paying too much for a normal amount. Also is your heating electric or gas/other?

Re: Tech guys - What is yor electricity bill!!

Mine works out to be around £30-40 PCM so I'd say £60-70 for two people is damn good, especially considering how much more stuff you've got, all I've got is a 40 something inch TV and the PC, i wouldn't touch one with a bargepole but do you have a smart meter as my uneducated guess is that other things probably use more juice than techy stuff, things like dishwashers, washing machines, hair driers, and other thing with heating elements in them.

Maybe that's an outdated view though as I'm only basing that on a tea-towel my mother used to have 40+ years ago when i was a kid that showed how much various appliances used.

$9 basic charge and 7c/kwh. Typical total is about $40.. Heating and AC are the biggest draws.

Power here is mostly Hydroelectric with some Nuclear and a little wind power. Less than 10% from non-renewable sources, mostly to compensate for the wind-less days.

Re: Tech guys - What is yor electricity bill!!

Heating and cooling is what tends to really cost money.

I'm not a fan of smart meters, but a power meter you can put on an individual socket is *really* useful for seeing what things cost. My home server with 2 spinning discs and 24GB of ram ticks over at just under 40W, you can even see if the kids start up a Minecraft server on the Minecraft VM as each instance takes a couple of watts. Something like:

    http://amazon.co.uk/Nevsetpo-Consump...dp/B07JN4SDMQ/

OTOH, when I moved in the house the kitchen had 12V spotlights in the ceiling, each bulb rated 50W. Being a long galley kitchen there are 3 zones, 8 bulbs, 6 bulbs and 4 bulbs. So just the main cooking section was sucking 400W in lighting, if I switch the others on that was 900W total! Drove me nuts when the kids left the lights on all night. Most of the bulbs are now replaced with LEDs, a few of the transformers don't seem to like LEDs on them so they have more modern halogen bulbs which are still less than half the original bulb wattage.

Then there was the fridge which had a failing door seal so was pumping way more heat than it needs. That was wasting a ton of electricity.

Take a good look at *everything* electrical around you, there might be some unexpected low hanging fruit you can deal with. Look for things that get very hot or cold and are on all the time.

Probably not that useful, I don't have our electricity split out and its a different dwelling but combined leccy and gas in an old drafty 4 bed house is £190 pcm.

Re: Tech guys - What is yor electricity bill!!

    3 people , 1 house, 4 beds
electric oven and hob - all cooking, quite a lot

(oil central heating so no electrict for heating)

    average £52 per month

so yes, you're using more than you should be. It's normally something you've not thought of..

older fridges and freezers RUIN your electric bill
    tumble driers obviously

Detached house - 2 people. Lots of tech used and gas central heating. Also have a tumble dryer and a dishwasher which are used roughly 2-3 times a week each. Especially at this time of the year for the the tumble dryer. Right now, heating is on around 3 hours per day on average.

My energy and heating is about £100 a month.

I done something like that ten years ago.

What I discovered is that my old fridge freezer and appliances on standby used up a lot of power. I replaced my fridge freezer for a triple A rated one and ensured all appliances were switched off from the plug after use to combat 'Vampire power'.

Re: Tech guys - What is yor electricity bill!!

Sounds expensive to me if that's just your electric bill..

I pay £70 a month for electricity & gas, and have more tech than you do switched on 24/7 inc plenty of smart home features/CCTV etc...around £30 a month for electricity based on what my smart meter IHD tells me.

I almost never use a tumble dryer though, and when tech can be turned off it is..it's generally only the "smart" and security stuff that is on 24/7
