In some ways I think society as a concept is over-rated. I do get your point you are making though, it's not as though I'm being completely selfish, it's that I fail to see why my finances should be impacted by other people being unable or unwilling to manage their own. I've never spent money I didn't have, I've never claimed benefits, I've always grafted hard for everything I have (and given up other things to get there), I started saving into a pension from the earliest I could get one. I've always saved for the "rainy day" scenario and it wouldn't be an issue to be out of work for at least three years because I have done the aforementioned. Again, I've gone without to do so. So society as a whole has a choice, in a lot of cases that involves relying on others to bail them out when things go wrong. Something I've never done nor had the compulsion to do so. I take no issue with my taxes going towards education, healthcare, social care for those in dire need (not including those who are too lazy to get off their backsides though). There are a lot of good reasons for taxes and if spent wisely I take little overall issue with them being used for the right reasons.
It's the younger generation I feel for though, they wouldn't have had time to do the above, so in that sense I take no issue with it. I'm not completely heartless to the plight of those in need of help, but raising taxes from those who haven't benefitted from all of this, that still rankles.
