whats the legalities of downloading tv shows? surely its just the same as recording them onto VHS or a DVD-R?
i'm talking specifically about shows that arn't released onto dvd etc

the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 has a specific rule on taping shows from the tv or cable to watch at a more convenient time (timeshifting), but does not permit a) transfer of these recordings to others or b) keeping them once watched (archival)
aha.
chapter III, section 70 - http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1988...n_4.htm#mdiv70
70. The making for private and domestic use of a recording of a broadcast or cable programme solely for the purpose of enabling it to be viewed or listened to at a more convenient time does not infringe any copyright in the broadcast or cable programme or in any work included in it.
to be honest, i dont think anyones going to bat an eyelid if you download tv shows that aren't available over here - for starters how could they price up what you've 'stolen' - if its not possible to buy?

Maybe, but that argument does not really hold any water. My car is not for sale, but if someone took it without my consent it would still be thieft.Originally Posted by 5lab

presumably people are more interested in the illegal downloading of music and movies not tv shows
3 people of the 6 were done for items including TV shows.....

Please do not message me about Scan Free shipping, I no longer work for HEXUS.net
including tvs shows is very different for 'just' tv shows though, isnt it.

I wonder how many people 'just' download tv shows though, compared to those who download everything including tv shows.
I think DVD, CD and game prices are too high, and I also think it's stupid that we have to wait for tv shows and films to be released at later dates than the USA, but I would rather have the original or see the film in the cinema rather than d/l it illegally and risk being fined.
My hypothetical justification is that I don't have the money to buy it, so I dl a poor quality copy of the net. I woudn't of bought it otherwise - so I've lost them no money. If I had the money I'd buy good and legal versions. PURELY HYPOTHETICAL.
thats completely different. actually taking someones car hurts that person, as they no longer have that car, wheras copying something which you would not otherwise have brought (if that is the case) is not actually hurting the industry.Originally Posted by Allen

What about taking the car from a forecourt? That doesn't involve hurting an individual.Originally Posted by 5lab
Anyway, the object it not the point, the principal is still the same. If you can't afford something, you can't have it, even if the means of getting it for free are there. It's illegal, it's wrong and you can get done for it.
I'm not saying I've never done it, I think most people have downloaded a song here and there or something, but those who d/l day and night, GB after GB and people who receive letters from their ISP about their bandwidth usage are going over the top and ARE hurting the industry. Most people do have the spare cash to spend a couple of quid on a DVD or CD, most people who d/l have fast internet connections, high speed PC's, loud stereo's, cars, not the type who are short of a few bob. Generally people are greedy and want more than they can have. I am greedy, I want SO many DVD's, but I can't afford them so I won't buy them, or d/l them.
