Digital Camera Batteries, which ones?

Basically I have just received the Fuji F420 Digital Camera:

It is an incredible, tiny camera.

It is around 7 cm in height and 8cm in width.

The picture clarity is superb.


1) Basically I am wondering about the batteries, everything about it is good, the screen, pictures, size etc...

But the batteries do not last long atall, I have found a link on Ebay to some batteries:

But I am wondering if I can buy separate rechargable (high capacity ones) and charge them up and then put them into this camera, Fuji say you can buy off the shelf AAA batteries and it will work fine but you cannot use rechargable ones.

Yet I found different ones on Fuji's website and here:

I am really confused by the whole thing and don't want to break my camera but would like a decent battery life.

2) Another thing is that the DC 3v in should be ok to use with my own plug (and change Voltage set)? As the Camera did not come with one and Fuji Charge £30 odd for it


3) I can charge the batteries up in either the camera or separate recharger that came with it, if I was to buy DIFFERENT batteries, would I need to use a separate charger or could I use the camera or recharger (bearing in mind the camera came with no DC 3v in Plug)



If anyone could help me with these questions it would be greatly appreciated, or if anyone is looking for a camera as me any questions, I really recommend this camera.

1) Batteries have an output voltage and a capacity, as long as the batteries have the right output voltage, the capacity can be as high as you like. I brought some from argos which are 1.5V AA's with a cap of 2500mAh (milli Amp hours). Thats a very high capacity.

Any batteries will be fine as long as they fit in the camera.

2) That power socket is so you can use the camera inside without batteries i think, i dont use it as rechargables are the way to go

3) Yes, any rechargable batteries will change through the camera, but depending on their size may take a long time to charge, the batteries mentioned above take 12v DC to charge within an hour.

Hi, just wondering why Fuji would specifically say not to use rechargable batteries but allow normal batteries?

Could anyone back up Ben's points (not that I don't trust you ) As this camera cost me a fair bit and I don't want to break it.

Well i think its because alot of rechargable batteries have lower capacities, and dont load very well so they may run out very quickly.

The synic in me says its to do with profit

Anyone else's opinion as to whether I can just use Uniross 900mha batteries?

Yeah, you can and they'll work fine. The fuji battery you linked to is just two AAA size NiMH cells stuck together in a single pack. As far as I can tell this seller is always amongst the most competitive sellers on ebay. I've never bought oanything from him myself (I have loads of batteries already) but he seems to have a good rep.

it might well be that the camera will only recharge their own rechargable batteries, and not shop-brought ones. thats the case with the kodak i've got

normal AA batts are 1.5 V but NiMh are 1.2 V so maybe thats why fuji doesnt recommend them. Just buy a couple of 2500 mAh NiMh batts I dont think they would do any damage.

Having looked again it is possible that the supplied charger won't charge normal NiMH AAAs- but the manual explicitly says that they will work in the camera. I don't know where you got the idea that Fuji says not to use them?
