And as for your assumption that more people have spyware who run Internet Explorer, I'd have to agree with you totally. But you have to be 'kidding' if you can't see that IE having the market majority leads to its customers having more spyware; not down to it being bad software, but due to the scope of spyware being spread across IE's larger majority.
IE owns like 96% of the browser market so no, i'm not saying that they don't own the market 'cause that'd be a stupid mistake

I think you guys have missed the point of what I'm trying to say. You can't say Firefox is more secure because more users of it get spyware than Firefox users. There are more than 4 times more users of IE than Firefox, so if we are going to judge, at least do it by percentage.

Firefox is a nice browser, but I have a big big problem with its portrayal as 'secure'. Lets put it this way... If 4 times as many people use IE, and the same amount of vulnerabilites are being picked up as Firefox, surely that shows something in itself....

Haven't you just admitted that firefox is more secure, just that less people are using it? If it's more secure, then why aren't you using it?

    *sighs*

No, I did not just 'admit' it was secure. What I said is that there are less people using Firefox, so naturally, there will be less cases of spyware infecting Firefox systems. Let me put this really clearly, as no one seems to grasp what I'm saying:

Say you have 12 Internet Explorer users, and 3 Firefox users. If Mr Spyware comes along and infects 1/3 of all users, Firefox will get 1 reported case, MS would get 4.

So, percentage wise, they are more or less the same (in the real world). However, Internet Explorer would have many more cases of such spyware infections, as many more people use it. That does not mean it is a bad browser. Also, we need to take into account that previous spyware was more or less exclusively designed to infect IE based systems, seeing as it had the clear majority in the browser 'market'. However, as Firefox becomes more and more popular, it too will be infected just as much, if not more.

You realise they'd take into account the numerous amounts of people using IE right? They're not stupid enough to compare ALL users. They'd narrow it down and average it out. They're not that dumb

Ooh good arguments, all posts about FF end up in a browser debate/war.

I don't think it's very good saying that x many FF users get this amount of malware and y amount of IE users get this amount of malware Xcelsion. It should be percentage as you said earlier. Anybody could spoof a site, phis an email to someone, tell them to visit the site and insist that installs an active x.... both browsers do that if the user allows them to (depending on setup) therefore just as much chance of getting spyware. Considering making use of exploits in FF, as there are less FF users than IE users (and most {I'm not saying all} FF users are 'in' computers so are more secure anyway... on the whole) so there's a much greater chance of 'doing bad stuff' to one's computer by targetting exploits due to the much higher percentage... and those IE user (most of them) wouldn't neccesarily know they've been turned into a spamming farm. I think I got my point/view across - could type a bit more, but am getting bored .

My brother for instance uses IE, he has FF, but chooses to use IE. He does regular maintenance and he still gets no crap on his system. Not quite sure what the point of this paragraph is; but just a point!

Xcelsion - the statistics (like KeZZeR says) will be done like X% of firefox uses have spyware, compared to X% of IE users. This is NOT number of uses - this is a percentage. Therefore, the comparision is equal. I have not seen the actual statistics, but they'd be totally stupid it they did it using NUMBER of users, and not PERCENTAGE or users.

I would rather use a browser that has 5 flaws but is fixed in 1 month than a browser that has 2 flaws that's fixed in 9 months.

FF is certainly better than any version of IE that I've used for virtually everything. I shall try IE7 when its released and make a judgement.

Erm Guys, I know it is done on percentages. I was saying that because of a previous comment made by someone who obviously didn't.

Plus, IE7 doesn't incorporate many features which other browsers do

Can't believe people are saying that FireFox is even getting close to the amount of security flaws as contained within IE. IE far outweighs the few we get every now and again from FireFox. Like everything nothings is perfect. Theres bound to be glitches, but these get fixed much quicker than IE.

Also thanks to DeludedGuy for the information on the new version available, for I would of been unaware of it unless this was posted (or FireFox notified me.. which it has yet to).. So thanks, will be downloading when I get Home.

Well, lets face it, we can hardly make conclusive comments about what IE7 incorporates yet. Its highly plausible that several things are added between now and maybe Beta 2

firefox 1.0.6 has been released, to fix the major bugs in 1.0.5 - and since it's not got the major bugs in it, they're actually doing the localizations.

thse running en_GB 1.0.4 or en_US 1.0.5 should be getting an update warning from their browser
