I own a few domains, all .com, but that is all because the major market for those designs were in the USA.

As for the domain limit, yes its three characters minimum, except when a submission is made to the domain registrar board, you can obtain two letter domains from them if there is a good reason. e.g. www.bt.com, www.3m.com, www.bp.com....

One letter domains are not available due to thier limited scope, i.e. there are not that many that can be registered!

Its VERY unlikely an individual would qualify, it normally has to be a business and even then so small ones, all the ones that have been assigned are to massive multi nationals....

How come .co.uk domains are so cheap and do they actually prove that your site is form the UK?

For Ireland a .ie domain costs a lot more than a .com and to get one you have to provide proof that you are an Irish based business or organisation.

its all down to the costs associated with the relative registrar. You get it cheaper if you buy from a large organisation, for example, www.godaddy.com offer really cheap domains due to the number they register, but thier prices can be high where there is relative registrar costs involved.
