There is an extension to the riddle too - when he comes home he goes up to the 8th floor and takes the stairs the rest of the way, except when it is raining, then he takes the lift all the way up.

That was the version i first heard

Is it because he's small and because the buttons are in accending order, the 8th floor is the last button he can reach on the panel?
