Thread: Google, the OpenSource thief?

Playing Devil's Advocate here: I see a few people claiming things like "Google is free; M$ costs money." It's not a complete picture. Macroshaft offers everything Google does for free.

To answer the poll though--I don't care. The only google service I use is gmail.

The majority of non-developers don't understand much about OSS, that's why they make silly presumptions

    Good comments coming guys

What would you all think if Google were to use their current monopoly to, as I suggested, make their own Linux build and step into Microsoft territory? Somehow I find it hard to believe they'd ever gain the bad name M$ has made for itself, but I guess anything is possible if they become the dominent corporation Microsoft is (was?).

Google earth... actually, it used to be called Keyhole, and it was already made by Google, they just renamed it and made it free.

Presumably this thread was started following this Register story?

.... Which goes to prove that the Registry is stealing my ideas after all...

This could easily turn into one of those government conspiracy films, where you have officials chasing a guy who knows too much..... But with the Registry and the guy who knows too little

If google do a linux distro (i highly doubt they would, since it would be very unprofitable, although if they got a deal with a major oem it might work out for them) then id try it, if it was good id use it, if it was pap i wouldnt. Sake as everything else they do. AS soon as they stop being the best search engine ill stop using them, as soon as google talk grows ads ill probably stop using it unless they can be removed.

I wonder whether those context ads, which highlight particular words in an email (which are made links to ads) will be used in Google Talk too? I hope if anything, they use the same kind of small advert MSN Messenger does, and stop themselves from buying into crappy emoticon, 'dynamic backgrounds' and other pointless money spinners.

Also if people are happy to put their code under OSS license like myself, I'm happy for anyone to use it.

For example, I could point out that if was involved in say 'mozilla firefox' cvs, that I did the such and such featuers that they used etc.

I'm with unreal. Free and cool services such as Google Maps just inspire everyone else to improve their own user interfaces etc.
