    Strange Tax code?

Got my first pay check the other day and I seem to have been taxed loads. My tax code is BR W1/M1 . I thought the normal tax code was just BR

I have just stopped getting my dad's pension because I finished uni so I am thinking that maybe this is something to do with it.

    What should I do?

That is (I think) an emergency tax code - standard tax code is 489L (for 05/06). You need to talk yo HR/accounts where you work to get your code assigned properly. It'd happen anyway, but it never hurts to chivvy them a little. You should get a rebate of the overcharge though, so you haven't lost the money; you just can't put your mitts on it for a while. The W1/M1 bit is "Week 1/Month 1" and BR is an emergency code. Quite common for someone who's just started work and hasn't had a tax record forwarded from a previous employer.

Or just phone your local tax office. They are very friendly. Paying basic tax generally means you have overpaid.
