Get a HGV License and go Trucking, If you can get into Tippers (You'd need a fairly New 8 legger to get going like, so talking £30-£60,000!) and you get great work, all the elements but a nice warm cab to get back into.

No, I'm going to start reading the Sun and complaining about all the foreigners coming in and stealing our jobs.Originally Posted by badass
I'm overqualified for most entry level office jobs- that's the problem really, I'd almost certainly find any other office job as tedious as my last one. I don't have the management skills (or the degree ) necessary to go in at a higher level.Originally Posted by BrandX

If the agency I just signed up to sorts it out I start as a hospital porter a week from now. Now I can't really survive on minimum wage but I'll tap up Tax Credits and housing benefit in the mean time- I feel kind of determined to do the job and do it well even for £5.05 an hour. My brother was in hospital recently to have surgery on his knee and it was the very devil of a job to persuade anyone to pay him any attention at all. I f***ing hate hospitals having spent weeks in them as a kid getting my ear operated on....so it's my full intention to spend the next few weeks being the kindest, friendliest, most helpful hostpital porter around. If it doesn't work out I'll take the nuclear option and move myself and my wife back in with my mum and ponce off her for a bit. Before I do that though I'm determined to see if I can manage with a properly working class job.
I suppose I'm lucky that I have rich parents to fall back on, but I'd like to make it clear that I'm prepared to work as hard as anyone to make a decent living.
If you've been making a fairly decent living in your office job you may find that your entitlement to tax credits is severely limited - the amount you can claim is restricted by 37p for each £ you earn over £5060 in the tax year... (2004/05 figures, not sure of limit for 2005/06)
why not do a scolarship thingy at collage? i'm pretty sure there is some government backed thing so you can work 2-3 days a week, go to collage (to learn the relevant skills) and get a job at the end of it. probably nicer being outside than a porter.
i was a farm worker for 4 months, i've also done water tank refurbishment, vending machine refilling, warehouse work and a few others. all hard work, but more fun than the well paid office job i have now

Back in my days when I was a student I had a variety of jobs. 1 was working in a Pop factory - Yes fizzy drinks and I had some seriously enjoyable times doing this. 1 of the perks was litre bottles of drinks such as tango, pepsi etc for 20p each.
Next, I worked in a heating elements factory using many machines to make the elements clean, bent into shape, electronically tested and then sent for brazing and plating.
Both these jobs we're made much more fun due to the people that worked there. I had some really cracking times while doing these jobs in the evenings to fund my college and student lifestyle
Am I right in thinking that you're just doing this to prove you can do a so called working class job then? You're taking a pay cut and as a result will be claiming tax credits just to prove a point?Originally Posted by Rave
Thats completely insane
I thought you were doing it because you were fed up of your office job and fancied more money as a labourer

I think need for a change is a big motivator here I'm sure the right job in which ever field Rave is after will come up ( be it outdoors , indoors or knee deep in effluent )
EDIT: and nothign wrong with pay cuts - I took a £5k or so paycut when I changed jobs , but I know I'll claw back more than that in training and having a future

I see your point, but you took the cut to go for a more enjoyable job with better benefits. I get the impression he's doing this purely to prove he can do a working class job.Originally Posted by Moby-Dick
If thats the case then he can be a lot more constructive either voulenteering or joining the army.
Also, some people in non office jobs seem to think that all office jobs are easy and that we never do a hard days work. Just because its not physically demanding does not eman it isn't hard work. If you take a few of the more responsible office jobs, I would bet that most people used to physically intensive jobs would be out of the job within days.

I think ( and I'm sure Rave will be along to confirm) that his office position became redundant and he was finding Office work unfulfilling so felt a change was required ( giong on previous posts )

Yeah, I took voluntary redundancy as the payoff will completely clear my overdraft leaving me entirely debt free. Had I not taken it I would either have been shunted to another department or been made compulsorily redundant anyway.
I don't particularly want to take tax credits/ benefits etc. but I basically blame the government for the fact that rents are so expensive round here- it's their fault if I can't get by on minimum wage if you ask me.
it depends on your definintion of getting by really.. i mean, i spend £650 a month on living expenses here in brighton (not a cheap area) - £310 rent, £50 ntl, £50leccy/gas, £40 phone bill, £200 on food etc... i could get by on £400 by getting a dirt cheap flat (£250/month. shed, but you can live there), £50 leccy, £50 food, £50 council tax. the minimum wage pulls you in (after tax) about £700/month iirc, thats £300 play money, in one of the most expenive towns around..

Good choice there then!Originally Posted by Rave
Nothing wrong with tax credits. You earn less you pay less tax. Of course that would be too simple for teh Gov't though. Have to turn everything into a burocratic waste of time to justify their own existence.I don't particularly want to take tax credits/ benefits etc. but I basically blame the government for the fact that rents are so expensive round here- it's their fault if I can't get by on minimum wage if you ask me.
However I dont think you can blame the Gov't for rent prices. Blame the fact that labour is over valued in the current economic climate for all but the lowest of jobs.
My local Citroen dealer want £50/hour for some fitter to work on my car! FFS most ppl could learn to be a fitter in about a month!
