Meh, I'm very content with a world where a good chunk of people take what they can from who they can. Never had a problem with violence either. If you've got something someone else could concievably want, you damn well better beable to defend it. Just my view.

I don't wear jewlery. I do not wear flashy clothing. I don't carry large amounts of cash. I watch my back. I rarely go out in public without a knife or firearm. I also mind my own bussiness when ever possible. Never been mugged either. Personally, I wouldn't have things any other way.

In a similar situation, I would expect to have to fight my way out (always assume they can run faster than you and alwasy assume they will kill you if they can), and I exepect any "friends" I have with me to pull their own weight in said fight. If they abandon me, they had damn well make sure I don't survive, cause I'll be coming after them. Not standing by your friends in their time of need is a far, far greater crime than walking up to and stabbing a stanger for his money, at least in my book.

I don't know the laws in England, but I seem to recall a thread about a lorry driver running a member of these forums off the road and then beating on him. The way I understand it, the <sarcasm> extremely logical </sarcasm> legislators in England have made it so good guys can't carry weapons (apparently even knives). They (like many liberals in US government) don't seem to realize that CRIMINALS BREAK THE LAW and that weapons laws only affect law abiding citizens (the very people the laws are supposed to protect).

Anyhow, even though I am allowed to carry a concealed weapon, I can't afford one. Guns are expensive. A good combat knife is very expensive too.

I've been in that situation before several times tbh normally in bus stops where I'm challenged by a gang of youths wanting whatever i've got on me, unfortunatly with the way societys going it pays to know how to look after yourself.

Real slack that his mates ran out on him though, I'd be havin serious words with em now if I was him.

Do you know how much gun crime there is in the UK?

    Very little.

    And you know why?

Because we can't just walk into a shop and buy guns. And that, in my mind, is very sensible.

Yes, but the logic goes something like, criminals have money, and tehrefore good access to guns from legitimate sources. I personally wouldnt feel safe being allowed to carry a gun around, even if licenced, hell, most people cant use a car, never mind a gun. Id rather have the odd incident of shootings (and it is still fairly odd although on the rise) than have every bar fight escalate into the ok corral

Remember lads, unless you're a boxer or whatnot, if you're in a fight where it's either you or them (ie. they have a knife), hit people with your palm, preferrably on the nose or jaw

    "Gun Crime Statistics

The following statistics are taken from the latest Crime in England and Wales 2003-04 Report.

    * There has overall been an increase in the level of gun crime by less than one percent. The number of offences has risen each year since 1997-98, but the 2003-04 rise is the smallest.

    * The figures show a decrease of seven percent in the use of handguns from 2002-03.

    * Excluding air weapons, gun crime as a proportion of recorded crime has remained static at 0.17 percent.

    * There has been a 15 percent reduction in the number of homicides involving firearms (from 81 deaths in 2002-03 to 68 in 2003-04). Eight percent of homicides involved firearms in 2003-04, which is unchanged from the previous year.

    * The number of robberies involving firearms has decreased by 13 percent in 2003-04. Firearms were used in four percent of all robbery offences.

    * Imitation weapons were used in 21 percent of non-air weapon offences. The number of offences involving imitation weapons was up 18 percent in 2003-04 compared to the previous year. This is a smaller increase than the year before, which saw an increase of 46 percent.

    * Gun crime remains concentrated largely in three areas – around two-thirds of firearm offences occur in just three metropolitan police forces: the Metropolitan Police, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands. Initiatives such as Operations Trident and Trafalgar in the MPS area, the Manchester Multi-Agency Gang Strategy and Operation Ventara in the West Midlands are focused on bringing down the incidence of drugs and gun crime.

(There is a 'Crime in England and Wales 2004-05, but I think this is representative enough)

yeh i have been chases/attacked a few times in and around portsmouth

it really sucks, i hope your mates ok

tbh i think the only way of making people feel safer on the streets is to add more bobbies, but then i would worry about things becoming a bit too police state esque (see all the threads about that in question time)

its a tricky topic, i suppose it wont ever be truely answered, just the luck of the draw

also, chrisg...why not just pwn them with a deagle?

Who taught you how to fight? Nose/Temple/Throat (last one not so advisible) if you really wanna put em down quick, a punch to the jaw does sod all tbh unless your built like 2 brick outhouses.

    Agree with you there dude.

I used to live in south east london - and twice there i was in a dificult situation.

The first time - there were three guys - one with a knife - jumped me on my way home and demanded my phone and wallet. after a minute or so of me trying to negotiate i knew it wasnt gonna be good - so i smacked one really hard on the nose (im a big guy, can punch hard but cant run fast )), kicked another one in the nuts (instantly dropped) and kinda chopped the other one in the throat. It was all done withing 10 seconds and after that i legged it.

The second time it happened there was just one guy, who i can only assume was on drugs of some sort as he was clearly wired and buzzing away. He just kind of came out of no where at me and smacked me in the jaw. As knoxville said, a hit to the jaw best be really hard to actually take someone out, and whilst it obviously dazed me, i had enough wits still about me to hit back at the guy - i was attemptng to hit his nose but missed and caught him above the right eye, altho this didnt really stop him, it put him on the floor by which time some other people had seen what was going on and come to help.

Its a scary scary situation to be in and you have to think fast about how to react - if i was a little fitter (all riht a lot more fit) and could run fast, i woulda been outa both of those situations quicker than a flash. Maybe i could have talked my way out of them, but somehow i doubt it, maybe i shoulda just given them my stuff - but thats a big no no for me. Its mine, i earned the money to buy mystuff and no scum is taking it away from me.

I feel sorry for your friend man, its a sign of the times that you cant even just walk to your local pizza place without getting hassle. I hope he recovers and the people who did this get punished.

This <sarcasm> extremely logical </sarcasm> legislation means that rather than having every other lorry driver armed and beating people up, it is a rare occurence over here.
Murder statisitcs suggest that the UK's laws make it a safer place then "Armed to the teeth as I constantly fear being attacked" America.

Of corse making holding concealed weapons illegal also means the police usually have something to arrest criminals for.
