    May God Spite NTL....

I was happily downloading a more up to date copy of Microsoft AntiSpyware, when I noticed my download speed had gone from a humble 35kb/s to 125kb/s. It appears NTL has upgraded my connection without my permission.

Now, I wouldn't mind if it was just that cut and dry. But this also means I now have a 3gb a month cap. This was not written into the original contract my parents signed, nor did it mention how they were allowed to automatically enforce such caps. So, effectively what they have done is illegal.

My question is, what can I do about it? Can I force them to give me my old speed/uncapped service back?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Are you sure about that?.

When I used to be on AOL, they offered me an upgrade all the time, to renew the contract, but I declined... then a month or two later they upgraded it anyway without asking, but they didn't renew the contract, didn't put any caps on it or anything like that.

Maybe they are just been nice and upgraded it, just contact them.

Well, I'm going to try and download a few gigabytes worth of stuff to see if my connection cuts out. If it does, I'm ringing up NTL for a row

NTL cap doesn't work like that - it won't just disconnect when you hit 3Gb.
If you consistently abuse the cap they will write you a letter or 2 & then eventually disconnect you weeks if not months down the line.

Also if they have varied the contract you can freely walk away without having to pay anything for cancelling etc.
Chances are that they have just discontinued having anybody on the old speeds & all the network is on new.

You should have an email from NTL explaining the upgrade on your NTL email account. I can't get into my account since I’ve lost the details, so i don't actually know if they sent me one, but they said on the site they would be.

They upgraded me last month aswell, you may recall my thread. Its highly unlikely that they've done anything illegal, as a communications company they know that services are going to need upgrading so they put terms in the contract which will allow them to do so. However I do feel they should have sent letters out explaining it all. I'll be moving to 2mb soon it think; I downloaded way over 3GB in October.

Hopefully my house should be getting a BT line and freeview soon, so if they play up to much, I'll be getting Freedom2Surf.
